Note: #311 in Dorfsippenbucher--Village Clan Book Appears Barbara Hertenstien and George Hurst were not married at time of arrival in America. Appears she died shortly after birth of their daughter Barbara. In addition Barbara had three children from Unkown persor in Germany before 1850. 1. Gustav-Ludwig b. Dec 15, 1844 Germany 2. Herman b. Sept. 30 1846 Germany 3. Rudolf b. July 21, 1848 Germany d. Nov 13, 1854 Germany. In addition the following children born to George and Barbara before arriving in America 1. William b 1850 Germany 2. Magdalena b. 1854 Germany (appears Magdalena may have died before 1857 in Illinois) 3. Johann George b. aft 1850 d. Abt one year later in Germany. Greetings from Randy & Pat Baehr in St. Louis. Records of the Hurst family continue to reveal surprises. Last week, we drove across the Mississippi River to Illinois to look at some genealogy resources at the Mascoutah, Illinois, Public Library that were suggested to us by a friend. New Baden, Illinois, where the Hursts and Baehrs lived, had no church until 1890. The nearest German Evangelische church was in Mascoutah, Illinois, nearly 15 km to the southwest. St. John Church in Mascoutah was organized in 1843. In 1868, the congregation split into St. John United Church of Christ and Zion Lutheran Church. The records of the Mascoutah churches have not been microfilmed or digitized, but they are available as photocopies in the Mascoutah Public Library. St. John United Church of Christ in nearby Trenton, Illinois, 10 km to the north of New Baden, was organized in 1870. Their records are available on microfilm at the St. Louis County Public Library, and some photocopies are at the Mascoutah Public Library. George Frederick Baehr, my great grandfather, married Magdalena Hurst at St. John in Mascoutah on 20 May 1876. But the church record says "Magdalena Benz, geb. Horst". Magdalena, 19 years old, was a widow at the time of her marriage to Fred Baehr! Johann Benz, born in 1852 in New Baden to Philipp and Margaretha Benz, died 14 December 1874. Philipp was a founding member of St. John in Mascoutah. The St. John church record of his death shows that Magdalena had been Johanns wife. There is no marriage record for them in a Mascoutah church, and I haven't found a civil marriage record for them. The St. John in Mascoutah church records also includes birth records for both Magdalena Hurst in 1857 and Barbara Hurst in 1859. Magdalenas record shows her baptismal name as Anna Magdalena and her mothers name as Barbara; [geb.] Hertenstein. Her birth date is shown as 12 July 1857, and her baptismal date is 26 September 1858. The record for Barbara lists her mother as Carolina Grossholz. Her birth date is shown as 9 March 1859, and her baptismal date is 12 June 1859. The 1860 U.S. Census for Looking Glass Township in Clinton County, Illinois, where New Baden is located, lists George Hurst (written in the list as Joseph Kost, but the first names and ages of the wife and children all match those of George Hurst) on page 162, and the following on page 161: Stein Grocehols, 44 years old Caroline Grocehuls, 32 years old Polpein Grocehuls, 12 years old Charles Grocehuls, 3 years old In the 1870 U.S. Census, this family is listed as: Constantine Groszhols, 57 years old Caroline Groszhols, 46 years old Charles Groszhols, 13 years old Ferdinand Groszhols, 9 years old So the Grossholz family was a near neighbor of the Hursts in New Baden, and the mother had a two-year-child in 1859 that was about to be weaned. These records strongly suggest that Barbara Hertenstein Hurst died in childbirth or shortly thereafter in 1859, and that Carolina Grossholz stepped in as a wetnurse for the infant Barbara. Since Mascoutah would have been about two hours travel time away from New Baden in 1859, it would make sense that the wetnurse would accompany the child to the baptism there, which would explain Carolinas name listed as the mother in the record, even though she was not the birth mother. Another Grossholz is listed as a witness. There was no death record for Barbara Hertenstein in the church records. St. John in Mascoutah also recorded the births of Carrie and George Hurst, the next two children of George Hurst. Caroline Horst was born 6 July 1861 to George Hurst and Magdalena Sartori, and baptized 10 November 1861. Constantine Grossholz and Carolina Vogel were witnesses. Georg Horst was born 8 July 1864 to George Hurst and Magdalena Sartori, and baptized 1 January 1865. If you would like images of any of these records, I would be happy to email them to you. I will post these to our ancestry.com family tree within the next few weeks. We have had fun discovering these new pieces of family information, but we still have more sources to look at. Hope you are all well, and that your weather is not too hot for you. In additon, Barbara and George had the following children in America 1. Magdalena b. 1857 2. Barbara b. 1859 . It appears that Barbara b. 1822 died before 1860 in Illinois. Burial site unknown....
