Note: DON REYNOLDS, 307-10-0587, was born on Jun 15, 1906 in Lawrence County, IN. He died on Oct 22, 1974 at the age of 68. He is buried at the New Pentecostal Church Cemetery. Information provided by Donald C. Reynolds and Viola Reynolds and from the family records of Mary Esther Hawkins provided by Paul W. Hawkins. I have a copy of the Marriage Certificate of Don Reynolds and Esther Hawkins stating that the Marriage License was issued on December 15, 1931and that the following Certificate was filed on December 15, 1931in the office of Ray R. Mitchell, Bedford, Lawrence Co., IN (Book U-63). I have received a copy of his Social Security Application which verifies date of birth. I cannot find a date when the application was filed, but the age of his last birthday appears to be "29" but it is difficult to really tell. If this is so, than the time of the application was in 1935. His date of birth is shown to be June 15, 1906 in Lawrence Co., IN. His employer was "Ingalls Stone Co. in Bedford. His fathers name is spelled "Gaberial Evan Reynolds" and his mothers name is spelled "Leotta Wagoner". Notice that there is just one "g" in Wagoner. - M.M. From the ALPHABETICAL INDEX OF PEOPLE BURIED IN LAWRENCE COUNTY, INDIANA - January 2001 Edition by Karen Baldwin: DON REYNOLDS June 15, 1906 Oct 22, 1974 New Church Cemetery Indian Creek Twp. From the letters of Donald C. Reynolds: My dad (Don) was very angry, at his Mom, (Leotta) for re-marrying, after Gabriels death, and, her "new" husband (Logan B. Wagner?) - inheriting all the land!!! You must understand - my Mom & Dad, were divoriced - before I was even born, ergo: I am able to only relay - 'bits & pieces' - as I can recall my few visits to my Dad!! Perhaps a retraction at this point! I should not have said that my Dad (Don) was very angry at his mom (Leota). Most probably, I should have said, that my Dad was 'in no forgiving mood' - for the transaction!! As per 'the land' I remember - at that time - that my Dad lived with Ibe & Eugie Fields, a relative (?), high upon a hill, and directly across the road, on another high hill, - according to my Dad - was the 'old' Reynolds homeplace. (Now, belonging to another name!! Another time, in the winter, Ibe hitched up his 'old grey mare - Nancy' to a log sleigh and we went about a mile to another Reynolds woman - a relative - to visit. (I am telling you, the whole area, was Reynolds, and Reynolds related! I can remember - as a very small boy - my Dad (Don) showing me the grave - I do believe - of his Dad! (Gabriel) The grave is directly behind the very, very 'old' church. I have noticed that most, if not all, of the churches and graveyards - in that part of Lawrence Co. - have 'sinkholes', caused by dripping water thru the limestone. The "hills and hollows" of Lawrence Co. are a prime 'Copperhead' snake meccas! I can remember - very early - that my Dad had a white German Shepherd. Pal, the dogs name, had jumped out in front of him, and had taken the snakebite, in liew of my Dad. Of course, the dog died. The only, only time - that your Mom (Phyllis, Donald's sister) visited my Dad - back in those days - she must have been about 9, 10, 11, 12? -- they butchered a hog. To make a long story, short, after the butchering, my Dad took the pigs bladder, blew it up, tied it off - and we three kids - bounced it "up in the air" like a ball!! (Ask your Mom - if she remembers this!) I suppose, that my brother Vestal & I, visited my Dad - in that locale - about 5,6,7 times - I personally did not enjoy (everything) about the visits. To wit: The very first thing my Dad would say is - "You look peaked! Here, have a dose of caster oil!!" It still gives me the shivers!!! Next, there are a lot of sulpher springs in that area. (Smell like rotten eggs!) "Here, a shot of this water, will 'cure what ail you' "!! Then would come the haircut! He would put a "bowl" over our heads, then proceed to cut our hair with old time hand clippers (Pulled the hair, rather than cut it!) In Lawrence Co., they called him "Indian Joe"! I am convinced that your ancestry can be traced back to Squire and Daniel Boone!! Especially, most especially -- when you really know - "Indian Joe"!! The reason everybody called your grandpa "Indian Joe" was because he "lived off the land" like an Indian. In his early years he did work in the limestone quarries. He had got hurt pretty bad, when some stone fell on him. He trapped mink, muscrat, etc. and sold the hides. He would dig ginsing and other medicinal roots, and sell them to the big drug companies. He dove for mussell shells in the White River and sold those. He had also get the "slag" - unusable chunks of limestone - and carve tombstone for people. He cut his own firewood. I was told by aunts and uncles that he had caught a 96 lb. catfish (!!!) somehow in a tank, on the bottom of the White River. He took the fish to Bedford, displayed it on "the square" in town, and many, many people gathered around to see it. I don't know if the Bedford Daily Times Mail - the newspaper - took a picture or reported on it. My mom told me that when Vestal was only a "babe in arms", she and my Dad would walk 3,4 miles - one way - to the New Pentacostal church a couple of times a week! About 8-10 months, before he died, I was able to get him into the low-income housing complex in Bedford. I took him over to it, to have a "look-see" and he declined because of "too many people!!!" He preferred the "solitude" of the woods. He died when he was 67 years old. He had completely used the money he was saving for two years to pay off his entire funeral expenses! He was never one to be "beholding" to anybody. Independant, a loner, and the "call of the woods"! Newspaper clipping provided by Viola Reynolds: DON REYNOLDS: DON REYNOLDS, 68, R. 1, Williams, died at 12:10 a.m. today at Dunn Memorial Hospital. He had been in failing health for several years. He was born June 15, 1906 in Lawrence County to Gabriel Evan and Leota Wagner Reynolds. He was a hooker and welder in local stone mills. He married Esther Hawkins in early life. Surviving are two sons, Sylvestal of California, and Donald C. of Seymour; one daughter, Phyllis Ione Massa, Richmond; eight grandchildren; one brother, Herman of R. 1, Williams; and a sister, Mrs. Pearl Mayo, Muncie. A brother, Lisker, died March 31, 1971. He was a member of New Pentecostal Church near Fayetteville. Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home (Bedford, IN) with Rev. Merla Craig officiating. Burial will be in the New, Pentecostal Church Cemetary. Friends may call at anytime at the funeral home.
