I have a copy of the Marriage Certificate of Don Reynolds and Esther Hawkins stating that the Marriage License was issued on December 15, 1931and that the following Certificate was filed on December 15, 1931in the office of Ray R. Mitchell, Bedford, Lawrence Co., IN (Book U-63). I have a copy of her Soc. Sec. Application, dated July 13th, 1943. Mary Esther Hawkins was 32 years old at the time of filing. Social Security Number: 313-24-9328. It verifies her date of birth being April 18, 1911. Her fathers name is written "Grover Cleveland Hawkins" and her mothers name is written "Bessie Pearl Wright". It is signed: Mary Esther Reynolds. She had later married Homer Travis, who passed away on May 1st, 1989. Mary Frances Massa is named after Mary Esther Hawkins and Frances Ferrara. Reynolds: When your Grandma (Mary Esther Hawkins) was about 14,15 yrs old, the entire family was travelling from Bedford to Indianapolis to see Bessie's sister for Thanksgiving. The old model T was hit by an "interurban" train, outside of Indy - and killed your great grandfather, Grover, and his daughter, Ruth. Mary Esther had a severe fractured skull an had a scar which ran down the left side of her face. She had to quit school - as she was now the "oldest" in the family - and go to work, to help support the family. Of course, the others also had to quit school and do the same. Rough times!! He had been in failing health for several years. He was born June 15, 1906 in Lawrence County to Gabriel Evan and Leota Wagner Reynolds. He was a hooker and welder in local stone mills. He married ESTHER HAWKINS in early life. Surviving are two sons, Sylvestal of California, and Donald C. of Seymour; one daughter, Phyllis Ione Massa, Richmond; eight grandchildren; one brother, Herman of R. 1, Williams; and a sister, Mrs. Pearl Mayo, Muncie. A brother, Lisker, died March 31, 1971. He was a member of New Pentecostal Church near Fayetteville. Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Ferguson-Lee Funeral Home with Rev. Merla Craig officiating. Burial will be in the New, Pentecostal Church Cemetary. Friends may call at anytime at the funeral home.
