Note: Carlo Massa and Domenica are listed on the manifest aboard the La Touraine, dated November 5, 1900. Carlo's age at time of arrival is 23 years, male, married, not a citizen; nationalily: Italian; place of residence: Livone; Ship name: La Touraine; departure port: Le Havre, Seine-Inferior, France; arrival port: New York City, New York; arrival date: Nov 5, 1900; batch number P50414-7, page ref. number 59, line number 0022; ID number: 604147070022. From the Letters of Charles P. Massa, dated Feb. 1996: My Paternal grandparents, Carlo Massa (my namesake) and Domenica Pastore, came from Levone, Italy which is located near the big city of Turin in the northern part of Italy. I know practically nothing about their lives before they settled in Clinton, Indiana (my home town). Charley, as they called him, apparently had some experience as a baker in the old country and so started a bakery in Clinton. It was a bread bakery where they made the best loaves I have ever eaten; golden crusty on the outside, white and fluffy inside. They also made butter breadsticks, but no pastries of any kind. It was a successful business and they supplied all the grocery stores in Clinton, had a big "walk-in" trade, and also supplied stores in all the smaller towns in the area. I can remember my father (Paul Massa) talking about making deliveries in a horse drawn wagon to stores out in the country when he was a young fellow. There were six children. Starting with the oldest, they were: John, Margaret, Paul (my father), Bernadine, Viola, and Silvio. John died after a long illness and was never married. Margaret married Tony Micelli. They had one son named Charles. Paul married Frances Ferrara (my parents) and had three sons: Charles, Frank, and Paul. Bernadine (Dina) married Martin Comba. They had one son named Paul. (Martin took over the bakery when Grandpa Charley quit the business). Viola married John Zelia. They had one daughter named April Joy. Silvio married Lillian ???. They had one son named Richard. When Lillian died, Silvio remarried to Alice ??? Charles Massa shows up in the 1910 census. Approximate Birth year is shown to be 1878.
