Note: Bartolomeo lived in the small town of Palazzo Adriano, Sicily. The following information was provided by Shirley Frisella Stevens: THE FERRARA FAMILY: Bartolomeo Ferrara was a scholarly man who had studied to become a priest. He could not complete his studies because he had to help his family after his father's death. Later, when in his twenties he married Francesca Cannarito, a very young girl twelve years of age. As a child-bride, she preferred playing "jacks" with other children instead of preparing his meals. He must have been a very patient man. Bartolomeo worked for a wealthy landlord as foreman in charge of acres of land. They had eight children, but only three survived - Cristoforo "Christopher", Francesco "Frank", and Francesca "Frances". In those days, childhood diseases took it toll. The women in those days stayed home - cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children. Their spare time was spent sitting around crocheting and sewing. Francesca Cannariata's parents had a butcher shop in Palazzo Adriano, Sicily. They had no boys to help them so they put all of the six daughters to help in the shop, which was quite unusual in those days.
