Notes
a. Note:   GABRIEL REYNOLDS was born Bet. July 21, 1822 and 1824 in Kentucky. He married Elizabeth Hackler (b. Jan 1,1826, KY) on 31 March 1844 in Lawrence Co., IN. (Indiana State Library Marriage Records - Genealogy Div.) I have a copy of the Marriage Certificate of Gabriel E. Reynolds and Elizabeth Hackler stating that the Marriage License was issued on March 29, 1844 and that the following Certificate was filed on March 31, 1844 in the office of Clerks Robert Mitchell and Abraham Kern, Bedford, Lawrence Co., IN (Book B-445).   In the following census, both brothers say that they were born in IN. Could this be true or were they really born in KY?: From the 1850 Federal Census of Lawrence Co., IN, Indian Creek Township, dated August 28, 1850, page 384, ID# is INS7A4441461 : GABRIEL REYNOLDS, age 26, male, Farmer, real estate value worth $600, born in IN. Listed underneath Gabriel, is possibly his younger brother, WILLIAM REYNOLDS, age 22, male, occupation is Farmer, also born in IN (KY?). PATSY, wife, age 14, female. Also listed are a Hackler family (most likely Elizabeth's and Patsy's parents): Jacob Hackler, age 50, male, Farmer, real estate value worth $1100, born in VA.   I have a Certified copy of a "Local Record of Death" from the Lawrence County Health Department, Bedford, IN: Local No.: A-290-21. GABRIEL REYNOLDS, died February 1883 (no day of month shown). Place of Death: Lawrence Co., IN. Sex: Male. Age: 65. Marital Status: Married. Primary Cause of Death: Dropsy (Edema - accumulation of fluid in the organs, tissues, swelling - M.M.). Signed by: Joseph Wilson, Bedford. Funeral Director: Not shown. Place of Disposition: Not shown . Date of Disposition: Not shown. Records also shows: (on back of cert.) Occupation - Farmer No additional information listed on this record. Parents' names & birthplaces were not listed, unfortunately!
(This Death Certificate on Gabriel Reynolds does not say much. I am not sure about the age that is listed at the time of death, that being 65. I am sure that his date of birth was about 1824 because of his consistant ages on all three of his census records. It is possible for him to have been born on July 21, 1822 - as listed on his Graves Registration Form from the American Legion - and since he had passed away in 1883, his age would have been abt. 60-61 years old. The 1880 census shows that he was 57, and since he died in 1883 he would have been about 59-60 years old. Either way, by 1900, Gabriel Reynolds had passed away, leaving wife Elizabeth behind. She lived with her daughter, Nancy "Eugie" (Reynolds) Fields and husband Ibe. - M.M.)
From the ALPHABETICAL INDEX OF PEOPLE BURIED IN LAWRENCE COUNTY CEMETERIES - January 2001 Edition by Karen Baldwin: REYNOLDS, GABRIEL E. July 21, 1822 Feb 28, 1883 Co I 50th Ind. Inf. Shiloh Cemetery, Indian Creek Twp.
From the letter of Donald C. Reynolds: I remember - at that time - that my Dad lived with Ibe & Eugie Fields, a relative? (Sure enough, "Eugie" was Nancy Evaline Reynolds, daughter of Elizabeth (Hackler) Reynolds - M.M.) High upon a hill, and directly across the road, on another high hill - according to my Dad - was the "Old Reynolds Homeplace." Gabriel's dad - I no longer remember his name - came from Horse Cave, KY. (Late 1700's) He owned hundreds and hundreds of acres, in what is now Lawrence Co. He donated the land for the - now - new Pentecostal Church - where my Dad is buried.) My Dad once told me, that the only stipulation, in donating the land, was that any Reynolds could be buried there - in perpetuity! (My Dad is buried there, alongside the "baby" girl - lived for 2-3 days - I forget her name.) Horse Cave, KY. was known for only one thing --- "hiding stolen horses" !!! Perhaps(?) that is where he made his money, to buy up - a "goodly chunk" - of Lawrence Co. !! I do remember being told that one of Gabriel's brothers lost a leg in the Civil War. (He came back and continued to farm.) The Wagoners were certainly in the family. (As well as the Hackler's!) I do remember those names. (This, might be the brother William who lived right next to Gabriel in 1850 or a Thomas who lived next to Gabriel in 1880 according to census records, but I am unsure. - M. M.) Gabriel E. Reynolds served in the Civil War, enlisting on Dec 7, 1861 as Private in "I Co 50th Inf Reg. IN" and mustering out on Jan 5, 1865, according to Ancestry.com Civil War Soldiers Database. - M. M.)
From the email letters of Judy McFadden: I am looking for any information on the Reynolds family of Springville. Need to connect Wm. and Gabriel Reynolds..locate Thomas/whereabouts upon death...Some in this branch ended up in Daviess Co. Possibly related to the So/East corner clan from Ky. prior to their arrival in Lawrence Co. I have a Gabriel born 1822 Ky. and he had a son Gabriel..lived Lawr. and Daviess Co. My ancestor is William L. (we think Wm. Lafayette). Gabriel and Wm. move together and live near each other, marry sisters, and both from Ky. There is another Reynolds family in southeast Lawrence Co. that also is from Ky. but none of them appear to fit in with the Northwest Lawr. branch, nor do they fit the Jackson Co. branch (that is with the information I presently have). However, the Jackson Co. families and my Reynolds, Owens, etc. intermarry, and follow each other from Lawr. to Daviess Co. and most of them arrived together from Ky. I have reviewed the very early land records of Lawrence Co. In. and never found a connect with our branch of Reynolds. Yes, there is our branch the NE pt of Law. Co. and then there is the SE Law. Co. branch of which I can't connect to us. I might have missed something, but I read and read. Only the SE names came up in ald territory books. My Wm. Reynolds is noted in the Reynolds family as mean, and a sot...falling off a wagon while drunk and landing under the wheels, killing him. My gr.gr.grmother was separated or div. from him at the time of his death. This is the same that lived in NE along with (wasn't there an Abraham??) Gabriel and Thomas. To be noted.. of all the ch. born to these guys..they never named their ch. after the "we think" brothers. All of them had money for land dealings and alot of them. Gabriel eventually lost his and I think Wm. just handed his over to wife. (a sister to his first wife) So, I think they came here after the death of a father and receiving their inheritance. With the burning of the Hart Co. Ky. records, I couldn't verify the Horse Cave conneciton. Are Gabriel and Wm. brothers? I think they are...with marriages of sisters, living near each other etc...appear in Indiana abt. same time etc. BUT NO PROOF! Cousins or half brothers might do the same. Spoiled that one didn't I? We also have the info on William that has descrepencies, either because we have two mixed together, or he was such a "stinker". As I stated in the past, I don't think our Wm. was Wm. Lafatette. The other researcher I have worked with...says yes, his name is Lafayette. This name never is reflected in any other known related Reynolds! Nor have I obtained any paper trail using this name. I think this started when someone located a grave in Dav. Co. on Wm. L. Reynolds..Civil War Vet....and this isn't his grave per the story from the Plainville Reynolds...However, I had never heard the story about our Wm. Reynolds losing a leg. So, things are still out there. - Judy McFadden.
