a. Note:   JAMES KNOX POLK HAWKINS was born Sept 8 or 9, 1847 and died April 4 or 18, 1922. James' first wife was Sermilda Temples. Second wife was Sarah Cracraft Tate. According to Anita Simmons, there might have been a third wife. This turns out to be Maggie Caldwell, according to Ed Kadleck. I have a copy of the Marriage Certificate of James Hawkins and Sarah Tate stating that the Marriage License was issued on July 3, 1893 and that the following Certificate was filed on July 9, 1893 in the office of Isaac Grim?, Bedford, Lawrence Co., IN (Book I-167). He served in the Civil War with his father, Peter, and was shot in the leg. Mustered out Nov 10, 1865, but was denied a pension. He died at the Old Soldiers Home in Oak Landon in his 80's. He was buried at Chapel Hill Cemetery by Lake Monroe. James served in Co F, 93rd Regiment of Indiana Volunteers, enrolled Aug 15, 1862, wounded, mustered out Nov 10, 1865, filed for a invalid Pension on Oct 13, 1885, App# 551831, Cert #354935. He died in an old solder's home in Oak Landon. He appears in the 1850 and 1860 census with his father. The 1880 Indiana Census, Vermillion Co., ED 187, Sh 1 shows James, 32, farmer, Ind, Mildy, 30, Ind, Leora, 13, Ind, Elva, 11, Ind, William G, 7, Ind, Sabra, 5, Ill, Henry R, 9/12, Ind. The 1900 Indiana Census, Lawrence Co., ED 72, Sh 2 shows James K, 9/1847, 52, farmer, m 6 yrs, 32 acres owned, Sarah, 3/1856, 44, Grover C, 8/1883, 16, Fred O, 10/1885, 14, Talmadge, 2/1896, 4, Pauline Tate, s/d, 6/1885, Edgar Tate, s/s, 12, Lillie A.
