Note: MARTHA M. HACKLER was born January 10, 1836. Indiana State Library - Gen. Div. Marriage Records, Lawrence Co., shows a William Reynolds married Martha M. Hackler on Oct 3, 1849. "Patsy M." appears with William Reynolds on the 1850 Lawrence Co. Census. - M.M From the LAWRENCE COUNTY, INDIANA MARRIAGES 1818-1886 by James Goff: HACKLER, MARTHA ANN & REYNOLDS, WILLIAM Oct 3, 1849 Book C, page 211 The "Lawrence County History, vol. 1 or 2" (that was put out by the Historical Society) has a very interesting article. The article is mustly correct, but has a flaw or two. It states: "Martha Elizabeth Hackler-Reynolds marries Henry Rains" It incorrectly mentions both names Martha and Elizabeth together, and the birthdate of Martha being Jan 1, 1826 which is really Elizabeth's birthday. (We know that Elizabeth was married to Gabriel Reynolds all their lives.) It mentions that Henry Rains and Martha were married in 1845 and that Henry died of the measles early on in the civil war (abt. 1861-1863) and that Martha Reynolds had to go on with her 5 (?) children on her own. This marriage date of 1845 MUST BE INCORRECT because the 1860 census shows Henry age 25 and Martha age 28 with an Elizabeth at age 15, possibly Henry's sister? So her marriage to Henry Rains HAD TO BE MORE LIKE 1855, NOT 1845. The 1850 census shows William already married to Martha "Patsy" for almost 1 year and Patsy's age is 14, but must really have been 18. (It shows here being b. in IN) Martha and William separated or split before 1855. Martha went on to marry Henry Rains (and had a few more children, Mary, Evaline, and Choe (?) as shown in the 1860 Lawrence Co. census which shows Henry Rains and wife Martha Hackler (notice she is b. in Kentucky) with their children. Sarah Rains is born around 1857. Henry dies after 1860 from measles during the civil war. William Reynolds went to marry Martha's older sister Almeda, the next best thing, and had possibly their actual children Gabe, named after William's brother Gabriel, Nancy J, Jackson Mary E., and A.H. The 1870 Lawrence Co., census of Jacob Hackler and wife Jane with their grand-daughter SARAH RAINS ( ! ) at the age of 12. So, is Patsy some other Hackler with William Reynolds? Is this Martha that married Henry Rains some other Martha Hackler? Between that article and the census records with little Sarah Rains, I KNOW that Henry Rains married a Martha Hackler, or else her parents, Jacob Hackler and Jane, wouldn't have had her in their house! Sarah MUST be their grand-daughter.
