Ernestine recalled that during her first couple of years of schooling she attended Swan Creek school in the building which is now the Swan Creek Township hall on Lakefield Road. This building was originally located on Benkert Road near the Charles Benkert farm. In the early 1920's land was purchased from Charles Benkert on Swan Creek Road and a new school house was built. The old school building was then moved to Lakefield Road. In those days studying was done by the light on a kerosene lamp placed in the middle of the kitchen table. She attended Swan Creek Schools for grades 1-8 except for a half year. This half year is in itself an interesting story. The Benkert family were devout Catholics from a rural setting. In order for the children to make their First Communion they had to complete a minimum of religious instruction. Since Catechism had not been started for rural children, they had to attend parochial school for a half year in order to receive the Sacraments. Ernestine recalls that she stayed with George and Lizzie Kretz and her brother Mike stayed with Joe and Emma Kretz while they completed their required religious education. By the time Ernestine reached high school age, her parents had a car. This enabled the children to drive back and forth to school each day instead of staying with relatives in town. On the way to school, the Benkert car would stop and pick up the Langley and Weigl kids and also take them to school. Ernestine is a retired secretary for the Swan Valley School District, where she worked for over 25 years.
