Notes
a. Note:   rly in the morning and light the communal oven in the village of Neuwirtzhaus so that the women of the village would be able to bake bread. At the age of 10, Michael came to America, arriving at the Port of Baltimore from Bremen on 6 June 1893 aboard the 'Weimar'. The Benkert homestead was located on Houlihan Road in Saginaw County's Spaulding Township, across the road from the Houlihan farm. The Benkert and Houlihan families became well acquainted and Michael courted Mollie Houlihan. On 28 November 1908, Michael and his brother Leo purchased land in Swan Creek Township for the sum of $7,400.00 from the estate of George W. Thorp, deceased. The estate retained the coal rights as these had previously been sold to the Bliss Coal Company. The land obviously was good to them because on 16 December 1909, Chas. A. Khuen, Treasurer, of the Saginaw County Savings Bank signed his name to the following notation to the mortgage taken out the previous year: 'This mortgage is fully paid, satisfied and discharged.' Leo and his new wife, Rosa, signed a quit claim deed on this property to Michael and his wife on 8 April 1912. This land presently forms the northern part of the farm that is currently owned by Michael's grandson, Lawrence M. Benkert. In those days, a trip from Spaulding Township to Swan Creek was a major undertaking. However, it did not prevent Michael from continuing to see young Mollie Houlihan, and they were married three years later.
Note:   As a young boy in Bavaria, Michael recounted, it was his job to get up ea
