Note: n Sacred Heart Catholic, Saginaw, Michigan. Bernadine grew up on her parents' farm on the East Side Bay City Road (now called Indiantown Road). She recalls that she was 13 years old and in high school before they had electricity on the farm. Running water and a water heater were installed in April 1948, the year she got married. Prior to that time all water was carried in from an outdoor pump. Any hot water needed was heated on the stove, including bath water and water used for washing clothes. Bernadine attended Indiantown School for grades 1-2 and 6-8. She attended Sacred Heart in Saginaw for grades 3-4, skipping the fifth grade and going straight into the sixth at Indiantown because she was the only student in that grade. She attended Saginaw St. Mary's for the ninth grade, completing her high school education at Saginaw St. Joseph High School in 1940. Bernadine then attended Business Institute in Saginaw, graduating 13 June 1941. She then worked six months at Saginaw City Hall at a pay of $15.00 per week. Her job was to set up a card file on all purchases the city made. Bernadine was also relief switchboard operator. She then worked for Earl Timm, C.P.A. until enlisting in the WAC's. Bernadine served with the U.S. Army WAC's from July 1944 to July 1946, including a stint in France. After her discharge, Bernadine worked as a bookkeeper for Universal Sales until December 1947, when she went to work for Arthur Schoonover, C.P.A. She worked there until 15 March 1949.
