Notes
a. Note:   9 returned to Saginaw Township. In March 1949, George had lost his party's nomination at the party caucus and the 81 year old farmer decided to retire from township and county politics. A good cigar, a resolution of appreciation, a parade of kind words and pats on the back were recognition enough for the long time Saginaw Township Supervisor. George was able to look back on nearly a quarter century on the board. Many monuments to his work stood throughout Saginaw Township, among them were Saginaw County Community Hospital and Saginaw County Juvenile Detention home. George had served Saginaw Township for 23 years but sociological chages sweeping the country in the 1940's also found expression in Saginaw, costing George his party's nomination. Residents were moving from the cities to the suburbs and farm influence was waning. The caucus issue produced a stormy session, strictly farmers vs. suburbanites. Farmers' plans for a volunteer township fire department kindled the blow-up. Progressives favored a contract with the city of Saginaw at an annual fee of $4,244.94. Suburban residents were concerned insurance premiums would rise with a volunteer fire department. George may have taken comfort in later years when a highly successful volunteer fire dapartment responded to calls, justifying his faith in volunteers. George was to know a half century of activity in the Saginaw County Grange, including service as Grange Master. He was also master of the Lawndale Grange and the Pomona Grange, and a long-time Farm Bureau member. For 28 years George was a member of the Prosser (Saginaw District 7) school board. He was also a member of St. Andrew's Catholic Church and its Holy Name Society.
