At age 17 she landed in New York City during the funeral of President Garfield with only enough money for her train to Saginaw, but no trains were running. A lady who had befriended her on the voyage provided overnight lodging and took her to the train station the next day. Through her sister who was already in Saginaw, Magdalena obtained a position as nursemaid for the children of Horace Potter. In 1927 Magdalena moved to Colorado to be near her son.
