a. Note:   ch bordered on farms owned by his brothers, Charles and Michael. From land records of Saginaw County, Leo and his brother Michael first purchased land in Swan Creek Township in 1908. This parcel of land, which would later provide the bulk of the Michael Benkert farm, was purchased for $7,400.00 from the estate of George W. Thorp. It can be assumed that a downpayment of $4,000.00 was made since a mortgage was taken out for only $3,400.00 on 28 November 1908 with Saginaw County Savings Bank. It is not known at this time if the land had been cleared for farming prior to its purchase by the Benkert Brothers. In any case, the first year must have been very profitable because a year later, on 16 December 1909, the mortgage on this land was paid in full.
