Note: 1860 census for William and Eliza Holden: NY, Yates Co., Torrey twp., pg 12 (502) lists William (54 yrs.) & Eliza (46 yrs.) and Holden family. Listed with them directly after the parents' names, are their children -- as young as 11 yrs. But after those children, was Amelia A. Holden 21 yrs., born in NY; William H. Holden, 3 months, born in NY; and Elizabeth Nichols, 66 yrs. old, born in NY. I believe Elizabeth Nichols is the mother of Eliza. It is possible that Amelia Holden is a daughter-in-law and William H. Holden is her child. -------------------- 1850 Census Town Of Milo --dwelling numbers listed, off one number -- I noted actual in ( ) Note: Nichols Isaac 630 (pg. 218, dwelling 631 -- husband, 70 yrs., b. RI; living with John Green, 78 yrs. b. RI and Worthy Green, 78 yrs., b. RI). -- John Green could be a brother or father of Elizabeth. -------------------- Ethel McGinty: My mother told me that Clara Holden's grandmother was a Green and a descendant of General Nathaniel Greene (July 27, 1742 - June 19, 1786). (This could be Clara's great-grandmother instead that is a Green) ------------------- The Holden Genealogy, Vol. 1-2; Descendants of Richard and Justinian Holden; by Eben Putnam, pg. 43: Amasa Holden's son, William Holden, married Mary Nichols, daughter of Isaac Nichols of Milo, NY. Isaac Nichols was my guess as to Eliza Ann's father, so I still think "Mary Nichols" is Eliza Ann Nichols. Perhaps the book info. is incorrect or her name included all such as Mary Eliza Ann Nichols. I know that the mother of Eliza Ann Nichols Holden is Elizabeth Nichols. She was on the 1860 census with Wm. & Eliza Holden. It is possible that Elizabeth's maiden name is Greene(Green) because the family oral history claims "Holdens" are related to Nathaniel Greene. I haven't proven our family connection but James & Avis (Shoemaker) Holden bought his "Uncle John Green's farm", near Carbondale cir. 1870. (Some say it was a great, great uncle in Ridgeway). They sold this farm in 1890. This John Green may be the connection to the relation to Gen. Nathaniel Greene. On the 1870 KS census, Osage Co., Ridgeway, pg. 291A (9) is a J. R. Green, 59, b. NY, next is Cynthia, (marked 4 yrs., b. NY, keeping house -- which is an error, should be 44 yrs.), Clara M. 8 yrs., and others that could be boarders. In 1875 KS State census, Osage Co., Ridgeway, pg. 25 is John R. Green (65 yrs., b. NY) and wife Cynthia 49 yrs., and Cora or Cara (14 yrs. b. KS) This John Green was born circa 1811 in NY so he could be a brother to Elizabeth and Great Uncle of James H. Holden Buried in Ridgeway Cemt., Osage Co., KS is a John R. Green, b. Sept 2, 1810, d. Sept 22, 1879.
