Isaac and Anna (BOON) NICHOLS were numbering among the Rhode Island contingent of pioneer settlers in Milo. They were followers of the Friend, steadfast and true. Isaac NICHOLS located on the Garter, and after him the place was named Nicholss Corners, afterward and now known as Milo Center. Isaac Nichols died in 1829, and his wife nine years later. Their children were George, Alexander, Benjamin and Jacob. George married Hannah GREEN and had one child, George B. NICHOLS. Alexander married Polly or Mary CHAMBERS and by her had these children: Joisah G., Johnson A., Alexander and Loring G. NICHOLS.
Milo Center as commonly known but properly, Milo, is a small hamlet of about two dozen houses, a store, a shop, hotel and possibly a few other light industries situated in the eastern-central part of the township. This point was originally known as Nichols Corners, so-called from the pioneer family of the locality, of which family Isaac NICHOLS was the head and parent. And even to this day, the surname Nichols, representing descendants from the same ancestor, is frequently in this part of Milo. Isaac NICHOLSs son, Isaac Jr., appears to have been the prime mover in the endeavors to establish a village at this point, and whatever was accomplished in this direction was mainly due to him. He opened a public house at the Corners in 1820 and was the first postmaster after an office had been established there. George B. NICHOLS and Herman SMITH were the pioneer merchants of the berg. During the state coach period, Nichols Corners or Milo, was a point of some importance, but when railroads superseded the slower means of travel the village lost much of its old-time importance. It is now no nearer than a mile from Milo station on the Northern Central road.
During the period of its existence the Center has had a number of successful merchants, among whom can be recalled the names of Nicols & Smith, Joseph C. STULL, William HOLDEN, Denreau & Fiero, Abel B. HUNT, Moses W. EASTMAN, George HOLLOWELL, H.F. ANDERSON, Schuyler SUTHERLAND, George W. and W. H. MILLARD. Among the various landlords, proprietors of the public house in the village have been Isaac NICHOLS JR., Philip DRAKE, Manchester TOWNSEND, F.F. RANDOLPH, John CLARK, M. DEPEW, Patrick BYRNE and others. The present landlord is Silas SPINK.
----------------- The 1923 book The Holden Genealogy, Vol. 1-2; Descendants of Richard and Justinian Holden; by Eben Putnam, it has that Amasa Holden and Abigail Pratt had a son William Holden who married "Mary Nichols" daughter of Isaac Nichols. This takes Amasa Holden's tree back to William Holden b. cir 1553, the father of Richard Holden b. 1609.
It says that Amasa's son William Holden was living in Hopewell, Ontario Co., NY in 1867. In 1865 census online, I have our William & Eliza Holden NY, Ontario Co., Hopewell twp. It says that William Holden was a postmaster at Dresden, Torrey Twp., Yates Co., NY in 1848. On the 1850 census I have our William & Eliza Holden NY, Yates Co., Benton twp., Roll #855, pg. 107a. On the 1860 census I have our William & Eliza Holden NY, Yates Co., Torrey twp., pg 12 (502). Both Torrey twp. and Benton twp. are near Penn Yan, just to the north.
The Holden Genealogy, Vol. 1-2; Descendants of Richard and Justinian Holden; by Eben Putnam, pg. 43: Amasa Holden's son, William Holden, married Mary Nichols (should be Eliza Ann), daughter of Isaac Nichols of Milo, NY.
The mother of Eliza Ann Nichols Holden is Elizabeth Nichols. She was on the 1855 &1860 census with Wm. & Eliza Holden. ------------------- The Holden Genealogy, Vol. 1-2; Descendants of Richard and Justinian Holden; by Eben Putnam, pg. 43: father is Isaac Nichols of Milo, NY. It is possible that Elizabeth's maiden name is Greene, because the family oral history claims "Holdens" are related to Nathaniel Greene. I haven't proven our family connection but James & Avis (Shoemaker) Holden bought his Uncle John Green's farm, near Carbondale cir. 1870. (Some say it was a great, great uncle in Ridgeway). They sold this farm in 1890. This John Green may be the connection to the relation to Gen. Nathaniel Greene. On the 1870 KS census, Osage Co., Ridgeway, pg. 291A (9) is a J. R. Green, 59, b. NY, next is Cynthia, (marked 4 yrs., b. NY, keeping house -- which is an error, should be 44 yrs.), Clara M. 8 yrs., and others that could be boarders. In 1875 KS State census, Osage Co., Ridgeway, pg. 25 is John R. Green (65 yrs., b. NY) and wife Cynthia 49 yrs., and Cora or Cara (14 yrs. b. KS) This John Green was born circa 1811 in NY so he could be a brother to Elizabeth and Great Uncle of James H.   "This place was long better known as Nichols' Corners, from the Nichols family who were the first settlers and long resident there. The first Postmaster at this place was Isaac Nichols, Jr., and the office was established before 1829. He kept the office many years and was succeeded by his son-in-law, William Holden, who also kept it a long time."
"Isaac Nichols, Jr. opened the first public house at this point as early as 1820"

His widow is Anna (Boon) Nichols. He is a member of the Universal Friends group.

1830 CENSUS YATES COUNTY, NEW YORK INDEX This was the first census in which the County's entire modern area was enumerated under its present name. The County was formed in 1823 from five towns in Ontario County, but had its present boundaries established in 1826 when Starkey and Barrington were annexed from Steuben County. This brought the total number of towns in the County to seven; Middlesex included the modern town of that name, plus Potter; and Milo and Benton included the modern town of Torrey between them. The map showing the towns in 1825 would show the same boundaries in 1830; the only difference is that the two southernmost towns were now part of Yates County instead of Steuben. The index that follows shows all the names on the 1830 federal census of Yates County. Each line contains first the name of the head of household, followed by the page number from the original census book in the possession of the Yates County Clerk, and a three-letter code indicating the name of the town. NICHOLS ALEXANDER 38 MIL NICHOLS BENJAMIN 46 MIL NICHOLS BENJAMIN 80 STA NICHOLS CLARISSA 252 ITA NICHOLS GEORGE 28 MIL NICHOLS GEORGE B 32 MIL NICHOLS ISAAC 32 MIL NICHOLS JACOB 46 MIL NICHOLS JOHN 52 BAR NICHOLS JOHNSON A 38 MIL NICHOLS JOSIAH G 32 MIL NICHOLS WARREN 258 ITA
1820 CENSUS ONTARIO AND STEUBEN COUNTIES (PART) INDEX The following index lists all heads of households in the Ontario County towns of Benton, Italy, Jerusalem, Middlesex and Milo; and the Steuben County towns of Reading and Wayne. Italy and Jerusalem had the same boundaries as the modern towns of the same name; Benton and Milo included between them the modern towns plus the modern town of Torrey; Middlesex comprised modern Middlesex and Potter. These five original towns were split off from Ontario County in 1823 to form Yates. Reading in 1820 included the modern town, which is now in Schuyler County, and also the Yates County town of Starkey; Wayne included the modern town, still in Steuben County, plus the Yates County town of Barrington. Thus in 1820, many households listed in Reading and Wayne would not have been living in the parts of those towns now included within Yates County's boundaries. A map is available on line to show these boundaries. The listing below includes the name of the head of each household, surname first, the page number from the National Archives microfilm of the respective county, and a three-letter code indicating the name of the town.

INDEX 1810 CENSUS ONTARIO & STEUBEN COUNTIES (PART) The following list includes the names of all heads of households in the Ontario County towns of Benton, Jerusalem, Middlesex and Naples; and in the Steuben County towns of Reading and Wayne. Thus all the area of modern Yates County is covered, plus parts of parent towns now in other counties. Barrington was part of Wayne; "old" Benton included the modern town, plus Milo and Torrey; Italy was part of Naples; Middlesex and Potter were both included in the 1810 town of Middlesex; and Starkey was part of Reading. Thus many householders listed below lived in parts of their towns that never became part of Yates County. A map is available showing town boundaries in 1810. On each line the name of the householder is listed, surname first, followed by a page number from the National Archives microfilm of the respective county, and a three-letter abbreviation denoting the town.
