TOMBSTONE: Anna Marie Witt ------------------ Obituary for Maria Heidtmann Witt Our sister, Maria Witt, was born October 28, 1858, at Hanover, Germany, and departed this life September 18, 1928, at Ellinwood, Kansas, at the age of 69 years, 10 months, and 20 days. Heart failure was the cause of her death. In 1884 she came to America and was married to John Witt, who preceded her in death in 1907. This union was blessed with six children, one son and five daughters. Mrs. Witt's home was at Bison, Kansas, where she was a member of the German Baptist church. Her empty place will be very noticeable there, as she was always ready to serve. Mrs. Witt's death is mourned by her son Wilhelm, and the daughters, Anna Allen, Minnie Hildebrand, Margarett Hildebrand, Dora Fairbanks, and Hanna Fischer, and their respective wife and husbands. There also remain 21 grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters. The funeral was held from the home of Will Hildebrand. After the funeral there, services were conducted at the German Baptist church, where the Rev. C.L. Dallmus from Bison preached the funeral sermon, assisted by the Rev. C. Wiebe from Ellinwood and the Rev. O. Roth from Stafford. Interment was in the Stafford cemetery. ------------------- Obituary for Maria Heidtmann Witt Mrs. Mary Witt died Tuesday, Sept. 18, at the home of a daughter, Mrs. Herman Fisher, at Ellinwood. Mrs. Witt was a former resident of this county and is widely and favorably known throughout the northern part of the county. Mrs. John Allen, Mrs. Will Hildebrand, and Mrs. Henry Hildebrand are all daughters of Mrs. Witt. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Friday at the German Baptist church north of Stafford unless there should be some unexpected change in the plans. ------------------ Obituary for Maria Heidtmann Witt (Original was written in German) Our sister Maria Witt, born Heidtmann, was born October 29, 1858 in Hanover, Germany. In 1884 she came to the United States and was married to Johann Witt. She established her home in the vicinity of Bison, KS. Six children - 1 son and 5 daughters - were born to this union. Her husband passed away on April 9, 1907. In 1894 she accepted Christ and was baptized by Brother Thielenhaus. In 1917 she joined the German Baptist Church where she remained a faithful member until her death. At the time of her death, she was living in the home of her children, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Fischer, in Ellinwood, KS. During the night of September 17, 1928, while she was sleeping, the Lord took her home. She had no illness at the time of her death. She reached the age of 69 years, 10 months and 20 days. Her hope was based on the grace of Jesus Christ. The children who are mourning her passing are her son Wilhelm, Bison, KS; her daughter, Mrs. Dora Fairbanks, Bison, KS; Mrs. Minnie Hildebrandt, Mrs. Anna Allen, Mrs. Margaret Hildebrandt, Stafford, KS and Hannah Fischer, Ellinwood, KS. Twenty-one grandchildren survive. Others surviving our sister are 1 brother and 2 sisters in New York and 1 brother and 1 sister in Germany and many relatives and friends in the area. The funeral service took place in our congregation's church at Stafford, KS. But the request of the deceased, the undersigned spoke on Ecclesiastes 7:1 and Brother Roth spoke in English on John 16:29. Her final resting place is the Stafford City cemetery. She rests with the Lord. ----- C.F. Dallmlus Translated by John Dick, Hillsboro, KS - Tabor College German Instructor. ----------------- The German born persons that were on the 1920 census often used "American" names to show their allegiance to the US. Such is the case for Marie Witt, shown as "Mary Witt", and Franz & Marie Hildebrand shown as "Frank & Mary Hildebrand".
