History of Huron and Erie Counties, Ohio (oversized) 977.11 H941 W676. Norwich township Pg. 418 --- "In the fall of the year 1815, Chauncey Woodruff and Wilder Lawrence, with their respective families, left Saratoga Co., NY, for the wilderness of Ohio. After a tedious journey, they reached Trumbull County, where they rested until the severe months of winter had passed. Chauncey Woodruff and his son, George H., came on to Norwich and selected lots for future homes. The son remained at New Haven while his father returned for the family. (see Chauncey for more on this) Pg. 419 -- The settlers were poor and bought their land on credit. No deeds had been given, and a written agreement constituted the title. A few acres of clearing, or perhaps a log cabin, constituted their only property. Trading lots and moving from one to another was almost as easily done as swapping rifles, and it was not uncommon for two or three individuals to succed each other on the smae lot in as many years. In 1820 or 1821, a difficulty broke out about the title to the land, that nearly ruined the settlement. The litigation continued until 1826, but nearly all the settlers had gone. Of those who remained was George H. Woodruff and Jesse Woodruff. Pg. 422 -- George H. Woodruff -- set out orchards in 1827. -- purchased (trees) his of Morris Read, of Sherman. Pg. 423 -- Norwich was attached to Greenfield township in 1818 -- In 1820, the township of Sherman was organized, with Norwich attached. The April election -- Medad Woodruff (was one of two) trustees and Jesse Woodruff, clerk. -- in 1820, Russell Woodruff, of Norwich, was elected justice of the peace-- in 1827, Norwich was detached from Sherman and organized as a separate township. The first election, held in April of that year, was at the log school house near the former residence of George H. Woodruff -- the qualified electors at this election were: -- Medad Woodruff -- Russell Woodruff and G. H. Woodruff. -- officers elected -- Russell Woodruff, trustee -- . Pg. 424 --"The first school house was built in the spring of 1819. It was located on the east bank of Slate run, west of and near where stands the former residence of George H. Woodruff, on lot six. -- In 1848 a Division of the sons of Temperance was organized. The charter members were: -- George H. Woodruff, Chauncey Woodruff --. Pg. 425 -- In 1830, Benjamin Moore built a saw mill on Slate run, on the west end of the farm afterwards owned by G.H. Woodruff. ------------------ 1860 census OH, Huron Co., Norwich twp., pg. 144: maybe him listed as George U. Woodruff, 65 yrs., b. NY with Earl and Mary Burlingham family. Our George H. Woodruff was in the same location in 1850 with his second wife, Elizabeth. Maybe the Burlinghams are relatives of Elizabeth's and she had died. ------------------ Name: Jane Curci Email: curci@comcast.net http://www.heritagepursuit.com/Richland/RichlandWashington.htm
