Note: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/pages/irish/genealogynames.html White: A common name throughout the world, in Ireland it stems mainly from the "le Whytes" who came to Ireland with the Anglo-Normans; there were also Whites who came from England. The name in Irish is either spelled de Faoite or Mac Faoitigh. The Whites can be found in Down, Limerick, Sligo and Wexford. "Emigrants of the Emerald Isle" by Gail White (info sent by Patricia Pepple (ppepple@@myjaycounty.con) Nov. 2002) Miss White states that although the White ancestors came from Ireland, they evidently were not native Irish since they were Protestants. She further says that her grandfather, William Taylor White, said the Whites were Presbyterians (Knox Presbyterians) indicated they were among the people from England & Scotland whom James I induced to settle in Ireland in an effort to subdue the Irish. If this is true, it means the Whites had been living in Ireland for almost 200 years when the first William White came to America. William O. White was the earliest White ancestor to emigrate to America from Ireland, however his son William was the first to come. "Emigrants of the Emerald Isle" by Gail White (info sent by Patricia Pepple (ppepple@@myjaycounty.con) Nov. 2002) Practically all we know of William G. White is given in a brief article written by William Taylor White, his grandson, in 1909. After coming to America, William & Catherine settled in Tuckahoe Draft, later called Irish Corner, in Monroe Co., VA (now W.
