Patterson) had the following reaction when shown the photo as relayed by her daughter, and later told by her directly to me: "YES! Mom was so excited about that picture! She definitely remembered him! She said that was definitely her grandpa as she remembered him!" - 2003 ______________________________________________________________________________________________ Stewart County Georgia Marriage Index states James G. Patterson were James Patterson and Martha Hardie, and that James G. Patterson was born in Stewart County, Georgia. Proven by Mary Eliazabeth Patterson Hilliard's death certificate - sister of James G. Patterson - which states that Mary Patterson was born in Stewart County, Georgia, and her parents were Jas. Patterson and Martha Hardie. ______________________________________________________________________________________________ James G. Patterson Ancestry Documentation Summary as of 12/2003 WN - 12/2003 FACTS It is established that James G. Patterson is the father of Hulda Patterson, who is the mother of Mary Gladys Hobby, who is the mother of Flora Nell Jones. James Patterson's death certificate lists his mother as Martha Hardy. James G. Patterson was in the 31st Georgia Infantry, Company E, Bartow Guards. The Bartow Guards consisted of citizens from Stewart County, Georgia. There was an individual named William B. Patterson (b. 1832 in Georgia) who served in the same Company with James G. Patterson. William Patterson was killed at Gettysburg. No record of the marriage of James Patterson to Martha Hardy/Hardie can be found in the official Georgia Marriage Index. The Georgia Marriage Records do indicate that a James Patterson married Ellen Golden on 6/4/1828. No record of the marriage of James P. Patterson can be found in the official records of the Georgia Marriage Index or the Alabama Marriage Index. The Stewart County, Georgia, marriage index indicates that Mrs. Martha Patterson married Thomas Dixon on 2/20/1845 in Stewart County, Georgia. A record of marriage for Thomas Dixon (or Dickson) cannot be found in the Alabama index of marriage records. A complete search/review of the 1850 US Census for Stewart County, Georgia revealed no viable matches for James Patterson. The closest match was for the household of James Patterson (age 35, born in South Carolina), Rachel (age 49), William (age 16), Joseph (age 14), Sarah (age 11), Frances (age 9), and M.A. (age 3). There was only one match for Thomas Dixon, which is included below. There are is only one Patterson household listed in the US Census records for Wilkinson County, Georgia for the year 1850. This is Eleanor Patterson and Katharno (?). A complete search/review of the 1860 US Census for the State of Georgia, surname Patterson/Paterson resulted in the following households that could possibly be a match, allowing a +/- 3 year variance for James Patterson's age: Hall County, Georgia C.S. Patterson - age 58 (born in North Carolina) Nancy - age 31 Joseph - age 20 James - age 16 Holman - age 14 Mary - age 13 Powel - age 7 Carroll County, Georgia Emery Patterson - age 49 Sarah - age 39 (born in South Carolina) Jim - age 18 OTHER INFORMATION - Family Recollections - Family Tree Files James G. Patterson had a son named Lucious F. Patterson. Lucious' granddaughter, Shirley, told me personally that her aunt (Euris Snell, only daughter of Lucious) told her that James G. Patterson had a half brother named Joe Dixon. Shirley also states that the "G" stands for Gillespie. A family tree posted on GenCircles indicates that Martha Hardy (b. 1810 in Wilkinson County, GA; d. 8/30/1883 in Pike County, AL) married James Patterson (b. 2/14/1806) on 2/13/1831 in Wilkinson County, Georgia. There are five children listed - William Patterson (b. about 1832, died 1863 in Gettysburg, VA), John Patterson (b. about 1834), Martha Ann Patterson (b. 6/21/1838 in Lumpkin, GA), James Patterson, and Mary Elizabeth Patterson (b. 4/30/1827 in Lumpkin, GA). This same file indicates that Martha Hardy married Thomas Dixon on 2/20/1845 in Stewart County, GA. Martha Hardy's parents are listed as John Hardy (b. 6/19/1769 in North Carolina) and Demarius Maria Etheridge (b. 7/4/1780 in North Carolina). A "record submitted after 1991 by a member of the LDS Church" is listed in the FamilySearch International Genealogical Index. The record indicates that James Pickens Patterson married Martha Hardy (b. about 1812) on 2/13/1831 in Georgia. However, the LDS site, FamilySearch International Genealogical Index, lists contradictory information regarding the marriage of Thomas Dixon and Martha Patterson. The site indicates that Thomas Dixon (d 1872) married Mrs. Martha Hardie Patterson (b 2/20/1845?) in 1844, in Brundidge, Pike County, Alabama. The same site also lists through a different family file, that Thomas Dixon (b 4/8/1802, d 10/26/1872) married Mrs. Martha Hardie Patterson (b abt. 1806) on 2/20/1845, in Richland, Georgia. Thomas Dixon's parents are listed as Robert Dixon and Allie Tootle. A family tree posted to Genealogy.com indicates that James Picken Patterson was married to Martha Hardie. They had a child named Mary Elizabeth Patterson. Mary Elizabeth Patterson is listed as married to Charles Wesley Hilliard. Another family tree posted to Genealogy.com indicates that Martha Hardy (b. about 1805) was married to Dixon. Martha Hardy's parents are listed as John Hardy (Hardie) Demarius Etheridge. Martha Hardy's siblings are listed as Robert, Joel, Demarius, John E., Nancy, and Vinson. The Dixon on one and the Dickson on the other are the same families. Around the mid 1870's, after the death of Thomas, Martha came to Texas. She is on the 1880 Hamilton Co., TX census living with her son, Joseph Hardy Dixon. She is listed as Martha Young. There is a marriage record in Hamilton for her and a D. K. Young. He must have died before 1880 and she was living with Joseph Hardy Dixon at the time of the census. I thought for a long time that she must have died in Hamilton Co. TX. But I received a great amount of info from a Dixon family researcher. Among this info was a copy of a letter from Thomas Dixon's younger sister, Catherine, written to their brother, Shadrach Dixon, in Texas. The letter was dated sometime in 1883. Catherine lived in Pike Co., AL and is buried there. She tells Shadrach that Thomas' widow had recently died. She said that Martha had stayed with her for a while then went to stay with her son or daughter (I can't remember off the top of my head which she said) and died there. Based on this letter, Martha apparently died in Alabama and that's why I couldn't find her burial place in Hamilton Co., TX. ___________ A couple of additional things I've found since I sent you the file: According to the info from Bo Price, Martha Hardie and James Pickens Patterson were married Feb. 13, 1831. He says in Stewart Co., GA. I don't know where he got the date or the county. I would think Wilkinson Co., GA would be more likely to have been the place of their marriage. Also, he has info that Martha's brother, Joel Hardie, was married to James Pickens Patterson's sister, Margaret Patterson. The book "Shade's Tree", a history of Shadrack Dixon, simply states: "Thomas' second wife, Mrs. Martha Hardie Patterson, was the widow of James Pickens Patterson." ____________ I've found my notes from " The History of Stewart Co., GA". Abstracts - Stewart Co. Bond Book B No. 295 - William, John, Martha Ann, Mary J. and James Patterson, orphans of James P. Patterson; Date: Nov. 6, 1848; Guardian, William Nelson; Bond, $6,000; Bondsmen, Ivey W. Gregory, Charles S. Gaulden Since we know Martha Hardie Patterson Dixon was the mother of the above children, I believe we can safely say James Pickens Patterson was their father. I think the above record pretty much proves that. Do you agree? ___________ You asked me about the abstract book entry with the date Nov. 6, 1848. I can't answer your question on that. I guess it must have something to do with land or property that was once owned by James P. Patterson. In looking at the notes I copied from "The History of Stewart Co., GA", I also copied the following: Abstracts - Stewart Co. Bond Book B No. 199 - Estate of James P. Patterson; Date, July 1, 1844; Admin. William Nelson; Bond $6,000, Bondsmen, William D. Fitch, Richard J. Snelling. From this entry, James P. Patterson died before July 1, 1844. We know James G. Patterson was born in 1843 so James P. probably died in 1843 or early 1844. ____________ Thomas is said to have reared two children of his second wife, Jim Patterson and Mary Elizabeth Patterson. Children of MARTHA HARDIE and JAMES PATTERSON are: i. WILLIAM PATTERSON, b. Abt. 1832, Stewart County, Georgia; d. July 1864, Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. Notes for WILLIAM PATTERSON: William Patterson was killed July 1864 in the Battle of Gettysburg. He is buried there; never married. Source: The History of Stewart County, Georgia ii. JOHN PATTERSON, b. Abt. 1834, Stewart County, Georgia. iii. MARTHA ANN PATTERSON, b. June 21, 1838, Lumpkin, Stewart County, Georgia; d. March 14, 1875, Pike County, Alabama. iv. MARY ELIZABETH PATTERSON, b. April 30, 1840, Stewart County, Georgia; d. May 19, 1921, Dallas County, Alabama. v. JAMES PATTERSON, b. Abt. 1843. ____________________________________________________________________________________________ From Edna Beltz, great grandaughter of James G. When her sister, Laura Inez, turned 65, she needed proof of age so Mary tore the pages out of the Bible and sent them to her.
