Note: My Father, Armond C. Nielsen By Wayne Nielsen Written 12/2002 My father was a sentimental man with many interests. He loved antique cars (from the 1920s to the 1940s), antique (and reproduction) guns, model airplanes, motorcycles, local Ocala/Marion County history, and searching the area woods for old trash piles from which to excavate bottles, etc. Dad's nature and interests created a wonderful environment in which to raise a son. To my delight, it seemed as if every Sunday we were either hiking in the woods, shooting guns, or flying model airplanes. Dad would even take me from time to time to a local abandoned phosphate mine to look for fossils. While growing up, we always had at least one (at one time I believe that we had 5) antique automobiles in our possession. By the age of 10 or 12, I was driving dad's 1926 Ford Model T. The motorcycles were a great source of fun and recreation. I received my first motorcycle when I was 14 years of age. We did mostly street biking. One summer we even rode our motorcycles to Indiana. Dad was a Medical Laboratory Technologist and Histo-Technologist. In spite of many years of what was to him unfulfilling and mundane work, he never missed a payday. His job was actually very important (and I'm sure quite stressful) as the quality of his work could, and often would, literally mean the difference between life and death for many people. This may have contributed to his marked need of sleep and the fatigue that he often experienced. Dad suffered from high blood pressure, and probably the side effects of the limited medications available for treatment. He once said "don't cry for me when I'm dead - I'll be doing what I love best - sleeping". Dad loved the North Georgia mountains, and many summer vacations found us tent camping in a Georgia State Park. My father was a very devout Christian. He held firm religious beliefs, and was very spiritual. To put it plainly - he loved Jesus. Dad was very generous with his limited funds, spreading them among local church causes and denominational enterprises such as the Voice of Prophecy and the Quite Hour radio broadcast ministry. I can never recall dad "preaching" or being "judgmental" of me. He was soft spoken and kind - I never heard him raise his voice or shout. Not that he didn't have standards of behavior that he expected of me - I even recall being the subject of corporal punishment. Dad's "way" made you want to do the right thing, to please; not out of fear of punishment, but out of love and respect. For most of my life, I can remember dad holding important church offices - Elder, Sabbath School Superintendent, and Sabbath School Teacher. He was always sincere and humble - never boastful, brash, or arrogant. I was very fortunate to have my father. I wish I could be a dad like him. The inscription on his tomb stone is a very real and sincere expression of our feelings - "Our Loving Father and Friend". Armond C. Nielsen; born 12-24-1922, died 01-17-1984. He is "Asleep in Jesus". ___________________________________________ U.S. World War II Army Enlistment Records, 1938-1946 about Armond C Nielsen Name: Armond C Nielsen Birth Year: 1922 Race: White, citizen (White) Nativity State or Country: Illinois State of Residence: Florida County or City: Polk Enlistment Date: 16 Feb 1943 Enlistment State: Florida Enlistment City: Camp Blanding Branch: Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA Branch Code: Branch Immaterial - Warrant Officers, USA Grade: Private Grade Code: Private Term of Enlistment: Enlistment for the duration of the War or other emergency, plus six months, subject to the discretion of the President or otherwise according to law Component: Selectees (Enlisted Men) Source: Civil Life Education: 4 years of high school Marital Status: Single, with dependents Height: 65 Weight: 135 __________________________________________ 1940 United States Federal Census about Armond C Nielson Name: Armond C Nielson Age: 17 Estimated Birth Year: abt 1923 Gender: Male Race: White Birthplace: Illinois Marital Status: Single Relation to Head of House: Son Home in 1940: Lakeland, Polk, Florida View Map Street: West Magnolia House Number: 220 Inferred Residence in 1935: Lakeland, Polk, Florida Residence in 1935: Same Place Sheet Number: 3A Attended School or College: Yes Highest Grade Completed: High School, 2nd year Weeks Worked in 1939: 0 Income: 0 Income Other Sources: No Neighbors: View others on page Household Members: Name Age Dorothy K Nielson 48 Albert K Nielson 19 Armond C Nielson 17 O Booth Mildrea 23
