Notes
a. Note:   Allen & Nancy's first 5 children were born in Morgan County, Illinois and their last daughter, Josephine, was born in Henry Co Iowa. Allen was a Captain of the Spy Batallian 3rd brigade of the Illinois mounted volunteers during the Blackhawk Campaign of 1831. Included in his brigade were his brothers Landy, Leftridge, James and William. Notes from that war state: "Allen F. Lindsey was elected a county comissioner of Morgan County in 1826. In 1827 he was in charge of two keelboats taking supplies up the Mississippi River to Fort Snelling. At a Winnebago village, some of his boatmen are said to have captured and taken with them several Winnebago women. As the boats headed back downstream, they were attacked by the Winnebago at La Crosse Wisconsin, but managed to excape. Lindsey was commissioned a justice of the peace in Morgan County in 1832 and 1835." From a history of Cass County,"- - - -Allen was said to have precipitated the Black Hawk War. Being a boatman he was attacked by the Indians and defended himself vigorously with firearms." In 1841 Allen took his family to Henry County Iowa. He died at the young age of 45, and is buried next to his mother in law in Hillsboro Cemetery, Henry Co Iowa. In later years, his eldest son Lucien B. Lindsey, told stories about their life in Iowa. One of the stories was about when Abraham Lincoln was a young lawyer and rode their area as a circuit judge. Lincoln always stayed at their boarding house and Lucien and his brothers and sisters worried, because Lincoln was such a big man, that he would eat all of the food before it was their turn to eat.
