Note: Family legend has it that 'red-headed Kirby from Cork married a Kirby from York' and thus that Margaret Kirby was Irish. The records, however, show that she was from Yorkshire and thewy are almost certainly second cousins. Death Certificate for her son Alfred Wilkinson Kirby shows that Margaret Mary Kirby was his mother as per information supplied by one of his sons. The parish records of Kirby Underdale always used 'Elizabeth' as her name. Everywhere else, including marriage, gravestone and four census records her as Margaret. On census, she once claimed Bishop Wilton as Birthplace but otherwise persistently uses Walkington. 1881 Census - at Stud Farm North Grimston as household head, widow with John and Louisa living with her. farmer of 150 acres with 3 employees. Gravestone advises age of 77 at death making her born in about 1815. Disagrees with Census and marriage which indicates birth about 1821 or 1822. She took over the Stud Farm of 150 acres at North Grimston on death of husband in 1880. Free BMD indicates that a Margaret Kirby age 77 actually died in the last quarter of 1898 and this is more likely to be correct but will need to check if it is actually her. (Malton District vol 9d page 257). Note, the tombstone was erected no earlier than 1911 as it is also 'in loving memory of daughter Louisa who died in 1911. OK so who erected it? 1891 census shows that son John is household head at Stud Farm, North Grimston, farmer and Margaret, his mother, is residing with him. She is shown as being born Beverley in 1823. Her daughter, Annie Kirby, 37 is also resident and is the housekeeper
