Note: Matilda A. Staples (b. 11 May 1842, d. 09 May 1897)
Matilda A. Staples was born 11 May 1842 in Sandwich, Carroll County, N.H.521, 522, 523, 524, and died 09 May 1897 in Meredith, N.H.525. She married Daniel R. Hubbard on 03 May 1863 in Meredith, N.H.526, son of Rodney Hubbard and Sally Robinson.
Notes for Matilda A. Staples: Matilda's birth record remains a mystery. She was the child of her father, John Henry Staples and I am pretty sure, Caroline Sanborn, whom I believe was John's first wife. They were married in 1844. Matilda's birth records are not available in Sandwich or the New Hampshire State Vital Records office. The first known source for her age is when she appears in the 1850 census as aged 5. However, after this point, her age is a mystery as I will explain. Matilda's mother died in January of that 1850 and her father immediately remarried to Mary George, a widow with numerous children. The family lived together in the 1850 census in Sandwich, N.H. Something appears to have happened within that family between 1850 and 1860. By 1860, John Staples' second wife is living in Danvers, Massachusetts with her youngest son and what appears to be Matilda. John Staples is not with them and I assume has either died or left the family. No death records are available to confirm that fact. However, his second wife, Mary George, along with her youngest son and what turns out to be Matilda, are all listed with the last name of George, not Staples, including Matilda. Furthermore, Matilda appears as Mary George instead of Matilda. The ages are all correct except for Mary/Matilda and I assume, since the youngest son was listed as the head of the family, that the census taker assumed everyone in the home to be a George. Further complicating matters is the fact that the woman listed as Mary is given the age of 18 when she should have been 15. All later records for Matilda correspond to that census age, indicating she was born in 1842. How can that be? I do not know as yet. But I do know that the persons in the 1860 census are the right ones. From the family bible of Daniel R. Hubbard and Matilda A. Staples, which was found in an antique store in Texas on March 27, 2007, Matilda's date of birth is listed as May 11, 1842. If this is true then Caroline Sanborn is not the mother of Matilda. Just more mystery to what the truth is. Matilda supposedly married Daniel Hubbard in 1863 at Meredith, N.H. but no records exist at this time in either Massachusetts or New Hampshire to support the fact. I have little doubt that this is true as their oldest child was born 24 March 1865 according to the family bible. Matilda lived with her husband and their nine children in Center Harbor, N.H., residing there from at least as early as 1868. They are later found in Meredith, N.H. but may not have moved as part of Center Harbor was absorbed by Meredith. Matilda died of an enlarged heart on May 9, 1897. She is listed on her death certificate as aged 55. She was buried in Meredith.
