Note:   History of Carroll & Harrison Counties, Ohio, pg. 626 -- Eckley & Perry: James (III) was about six years of age at the time when his parents established their residence in Harrison Co. where he was reared on the old home farm in Rumley twp. and in the meanwhile profitted duly by the advantages afforded in the pioneer schools. ------------ From the Biographical History of Harrison County, Ohio, Containing Biographical Sketches... published in 1891; and from the History of Carroll & Harrison Counties, Ohio, pg. 626 -- Eckley & Perry: James (III) McAfee, Jr., a retired farmer, New Rumley, Harrison County, is a son of James McAfee (II) and Mary (Wybel) McAfee .... grandson of James (I) McAfee, a native of Ireland, who came to Washington County, Penn., among the very earliest settlers. After his first marriage to Letta Gordon in 1840, Mr. McAfee (James III) remained upon his father's farm in North Township until 1844, and after his second marriage in 1849, to Mrs. Margaret Hendricks, he located upon the farm now owned by Jacob Pittenger. Here he remained until about 1855, when he purchased the farm which he now owns in Section 19. He remained on this farm until 1889, when he removed to the village of New Rumley, where he lived the quiet life of a retired farmer, and where he purchased a fine home, in which he spent his final days. His death was April 25, 1898. He made a success of farming, was a very industrious and hard-working man, and was looked upon as one of the leading citizens of his town. Both he and his wife, Sarah Jane Gundy, were members of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Politically, he had always served with the Republican party until his final years, having been brought up to see the evil effects of liquor upon those growing up around him, he voted the Prohibition ticket. He had in this, as in all matters, a deep conviction of the right, and was in every sense a representative man. --------------- From Catherine Webster tree through David Shiltz (Daughter of Peter and Catherine Webster Hendricks): Margaret m (1) 29 Aug 1839 Barton Akerson [Atkinson]; m (2) 4 Apr 1846 James McAfee, Jr., b. 5 Sep 1817, d. 25 Apr 1898, son of James and Mary (Wible) McAfee. James in 1840 had married Letta Gordon, daughter of David and Libbie (Archibald) Gordon, and in that marriage had three children--Mary, who married Martin Kail of Warren County, Iowa; Elisabeth, wife of John W. Finnicum of Dallas County, Iowa; and Lettice, who married John Manbeck, Jr., died in March 1882. Lettice had been brought up in the home of her McAfee grandparents in the house in New Rumley where George Armstrong Custer had been born. After the death of the McAfee grandparents, Lettice and husband John Manbeck, Jr., lived in that Custer birth place. James' wife Letta died in 1846. After Margaret's death in Sept 1878, James married in October 1880 Sarah Jane Gundy, daughter of William and Susanna (Gatschall) Gundy, b. 1843, d. 1904. None of the three are very big. New Rumley itself is not a big town. It is located in the rolling hills of Harrison County. Maybe 30-40 houses and the George Custer Museum. The first cemetery in New Rumley we went to was the United Brethren. The church that was associated with it is now the George Custer Museum. None of the cemeteries have their own sign. The second cemetery was the New Rumley Methodist. This is where I took your McAfee photos (of James W. & Margaret McAfee). It has a nice big white church next to the cemetery and it is still in use. I took a picture of it from across the street. I was in the parking lot of the United Brethren cemetery when I took it so that just tells you how close together they are. The third and hardest to get to was the Evangelical Lutheran Cemetery. Its church is still standing but all boarded up and now has ivy growing over it. I took a picture of it too it you would like to see it as it looks today. It was hard to find because it was located in bottom land with a steep gravel drive leading down to it.
