Notes
a. Note:   www.findagrave.com Memorial #9907971 ------ 1930 census: (Lloyd W. & Ruth A.) KS, Douglas Co., Marion twp., pg. 98 (6A) -- Harry and Lloyd Laverle must have been with relatives at this time and I can't find them on this census. ------ The Ottawa Herald Jul-16-1959 Note: the many typos on the original article were corrected Mrs. Ruth Annie Moody, 65, died today at 9 a.m. in Ransom Memorial Hospital where she was a patient almost a year. She had lived in Osage, Douglas, and Franklin Counties all her life. Born Nov. 21, 1892, at Overbrook, she was the daughter of John and Clara (Holden) Tregemba. She was married Sept. 6, 1913, at Overbrook, to Lloyd W. Moody, who died in 1951. She was a member of Princeton Methodist Church. Surviving are six daughters, Mrs. Avis Blakeman and Mrs. Ruth Ann Kaub, RFD 4; Mrs. Frances Pippenger, Ottawa; Mrs. Alice Cox, Deerfield; Mrs. Joy Christie, Wellsville; and Mrs. Ethel McGinty, Manhattan; two sons, Harry, RFD1; and Lloyd L., Oberlin; 30 grandchildren and two brothers, William Tregemba and Eugene Tregemba, Overbrook. Services will be conducted from Towner's Chapel Saturday at 2 p.m. with Rev. Gerald Mease officiating. Burial will be in Valley Brook Cemetery north of Michigan Valley. ------ Ethel (Moody) McGinty: Mom had lots of remedies. We never went to doctors unless it was something serious she couldn't handle. For diarrhea: two tablespoons of castor oil followed by a cup of lemonade sweetened with honey. For puncture wounds: soak in turpentine mixed with warm water. For drawing out splinters or infection from wounds: tear dry bread (bakery homemade type) in pieces and pour boiling water over it and add baking soda to make a thick paste. Put the mixture in a piece of muslin and put on wound as hot as can be tolerated. When it cools off put it back in a pan and warm it up. To keep it from cooling off too quickly wrap a towel around the poultice. For bee stings and insect bites: make a paste of baking soda and water and put on bite. For cough: Onion syrup - cut an onion in half and place a half in a teacup with the cut side up. Sprinkle sugar over the cut side. Place a saucer over the top of the cup and invert. Place in a warm spot near heat and let set until syrup oozes out into the saucer and use as a cough syrup. Good for croup and bronchitis. For sore throat: gargle with hot water and salt mixture. Then drink hot lemonade sweetened with honey. For stomach distress: a teaspoon of Raleigh's red liniment in a cup of warm milk. For sore muscles: Rub with Raleigh's red liniment: For infected or open wounds: Sprinkle with Raleighs Healing Powder. Or Soak in water as hot as can be tolerated with dish detergent in it and then put Iodine on it. For chest colds: Rub chest with Vicks Vaporub and cover with a flannel cloth.
You can still get Raleigh's products in some mail order catalogs. The only one of these I would be hesitant to use is using Raleigh's liniment for stomach distress. The bottle says not to take it internally. ------ Alice Cox: My dad was good to my mother. Every year, on her birthday, he would go buy a dress for her. We had to sell her farm that was south of Ottawa about 1957 due to her poor health. She lived in a trailer that was parked on the farm Clarence and Frances Pippenger lived on that was SE of Pomona, KS. She lived there a year or two and then had to go into the nursing home. She was there briefly and died in 1959.
