Note: . BYRON STANBERY Byron was born Jan.1, 1846 in Sandusky, Ohio the son of Moses Andrew and Alena Mackey. He died Jan.3, 1930 in Deerfield, Mich. Moses died when Byron was seven years old, leaving behind his wife and two small children, Byron and sister Frances. His mother remarried and they moved to Michigan. He enlisted in the Army Jan.12, 1861 at Whitford, Mich. He was 5'3", had brown hair and listed his occupation as farmer. Believe he must have lied about his age as he was only fifteen, not the required sixteen years of age. However this was easily fibbed, as it was common to write the number sixteen on a piece of paper, place it in the shoe, and then swear they were "over sixteen". Perhaps he did this. He served with the Michigan 15th Infantry Company H under 1st Lt. Charles Bisbee. He saw action in the Western campaign including Shiloh, Siege of Atlanta , Sherman's March to the Sea and the Grand Review of the Troops in Washington, DC. He was promoted to Corporal and then to Sgt. At the Battle of Corinth Miss. he was knocked down and run over by the wheel of a caison of a Flying Battery, injured in the chest. He was discharged Oct. 13,1865 in Little Rock, Arkansas. He returned home to Michigan. On Oct. 19, 1873 he married Mariah Diver, daughter of John & Nancy Diver of Deerfield. They were married in Petersburg by J H Gage, Justice of the Peace. They took up residence in a log cabin built on 40 acres of land that lay in the middle of section 35 northwest of Deerfield behind the Diver farm. Both their first and last born died many miles apart on the same day, April 25, 1918. It is said that Mariah's heart was broken and that she never fully recovered from the tragedy. Mariah died Aug. 19, 1922 in Deerfield, buried in the Deerfield Village Cemetery. Joining her in the family plot are Byron, Elwood, Mazie, Lena and Gertrude. Mariah's parents are also buried in the Village Cemetery. Byron was Postmaster of the Village for many years and a Justice of the Peace. Family tradition states he was quite a colorful speaker on the Civil War. 1846 January 1st Eire Co Ohio Byron born believe in Sandusky 1850 Father Moses A Stanbery & wife Lena operating a tavern & boarding house in the new village of Lansing Mi It was built in the fall of 1847 and was not completely finished, rooms on the first floor still needed to be plastered, three floors several rooms 1851 April-Family moves back to Perkins Twp, Eire Co, Ohio 1850-52 Sister Frances born unk if in Lansing or Ohio 1852 August 29th Moses dies-Byron only 6 1/2 years old 1855 Mother, Lena remarries to Lorenzo Young Mariah born in Monroe Co 1856 Half sister Ellen (Ella) born Ohio 1858 Half sister Leota (Lottie) born Ohio 1861 Half brother Lewis born Ohio 1862 January 12 Byron enrolled in 15th Michigan Volunteer Regiment under Col. Miss Lena Stanberry, of Toledo has been visiting her parents and many friends for a few days. 10/2/1902 Friday Jackson Citizen The 10th annual reunion of the Fifteenth Michigan Infantry will be held this year at Deerfield Thursday, Oct. 1. Byron Stanbery is in charge of the meeting, as vice president of the association, and C C Whitney, of Jackson is secretary. The Fifteenth regiment was recruited in Lenawee, Monroe and Hillsdale counties. It was in Gen. Sherman's army from Shiloh to the close of the war and marched with Sherman to the sea in Gen. Logan's Fifteenth Army Corps, participating in 32 battles. 6/5/1903 Friday WRONG P M WAS ON GUARD If we only knew, but we don't always. The Vicksburg postmaster sat all night in the office with the glistening barrel of a cocked revolver pointed towards the door, on the strength of a letter warning him to look out for burglars. None came. He is ready to shoot as soon as he finds who wrote the letter. While he was watching for imaginary robbers, real ones were pocketing nearly $100 in stamps and cash of Postmaster Stanbery, of Deerfield, Lenawee County. 7/2/1903 Miss Lena Stanberry is at home again. 7/22/1903 Just Celebrating Two Old Army Comrades Who Have a Right To Byron Stanberry and Eli McCarty, two prominant citizens of Deerfield, were in the city today, quietly celebrating an event that took place July22, 1864, before Atlanta. Both were members of Company H, Fifteenth Michiga volunteers, third brigade, fifteenth army corps, and on that day saw some heavy fighting, during which many a Deerfield boy lost his life. The regiment was sent to hold the "Johnies" back for twenty minutes until the brigade could be formed for action and made a charge that has become memorable in history. They made such a bold dash that the rebels thought the whole corps was after them, and just naturally laid down. The fifteenth captured the whole Eighteenth Texans, with battle flags and all, and the two comrades naturally feel proud to have been in the bold dash. Ever since then when these two "old boys" can get together on July 22 they have a good time together suspending all work and giving themselves up to old companionship. Deerfield sent out many men during the war but none braver than Stan and Mac. They have a right to celebrate and many friends wish them many more returns of the day. 7/26/1905 Wednesday Postmaster Stanbury Celebrates Derrfield, Mich. July 25- Postmaster Stanbury has celebrated the fourty first anniversary of the battle of Atlanta in which he participated, and he has done it in right royal style. The local Grand Army post and the Woman's Relief corps turned out. The aged father of the two boys, Byron Stanberry, who is a civil war vetern and resides at 34 Davidson avenue, Highland park, attended the funeral of the son in Jackson, and it was not until his return home Sunday afternoon that he learned a double sorrow had visited him. The son, who died in England, enlisted in the aviation corps last fall and with Lieut. George O. Middleditch and Lieyt. Charles A. Pudrith, also of Detroit, attended the aviation school at Campaign, Ill., the three going overseas in September. By a strong coincidence not one of the trio is alive today, all losing their lives in accidents at Lincoln, England, Middleditch was killed March 22 and Pudrith who was in the same machine with him, died a few days ago. 5/7/1918 Tuesday Jackson Citizen Patriot AVIATOR E.D.STANBERRY WHO LOST HIS LIFE AT FRONT INSISTED ON SERVING U.S. In Aviator Elwood D. Stanberry, whose death by accident in overseas service was reported in the recent casualty lista and whose father learned of this son's supreme sarifice on returning to Detroit from Jackson having buried another son here, many Michigan politicians will recognize one of the brightest pages in the legislature of 1909. He was page and messanger to Congressman Gilbert A. Currie when the latter was a member of the legislature. He is the second brilliant young aviator whom Congressman Currie has aided in getting to the front and who has later given his life for his country. The other one was Captain Phelps Collins of Alpena and Detroit. Last summer young Stanberry , who was then director of physical training at the Highland Park high school, applied for admission to the aviation corps. He was rejected because he had a slight limp in one leg which he fractured as a boy. He immediately wrote to Congressman Currie appealing for aid. "you may not recall me by name", he said, "but just think of the little black haired boy who was your page in the Michigan house of representatives in 1909. You liked me then, and I remember that I accompanied you to the train at the end of the session and carried your grip for you". Congressman Currie made an appeal to Gen. Squire of the signal corps with the result that Stanberry was ordered to take another physicalexamination at Chicago. Again he was rejected, but the slight physical defect was finally waived, Congressman Currie forcing the officers to admit that the lameness would not be a detriment to a flying career. Stanberry took his training in a ground school in this country. Later he took his actual flying training in England. He had been in France only a short time when he was killed. No details of the accident in which he met his death have yet reached this country. 7/2/1918 Tuesday Lavern Weiss and family have moved to the Stanbery home. 7/5/1918 Monday Byron Stanberry who has been visiting old friends here, left Friday for Adrian to visit his daughter, Mrs WIlliam Engel. 7/12/1918 Friday Byron Stanbery of Highland Park is spending his vacation with friends here. 7/17/1918 Wednesday Mrss Byron Stanbery of Highland Park came Friday to visit friends here. 7/20/1918 Saturday Mrs B Stanbery of Highland Park and granddaughter Margaret Stanbery of Jackson are visiting Mrs W C Engel for a few days. 7/25/1918 Thursday Mrs Byron Stanbery of Highland Park and Mrs Frank L Requarth of Detroit have returned to their homes after a visit with Mrs D S Sinter. 7/31/1918 Wednesday Mrs Byron Stanbery of Highland Park, Detroit is visiting friends here.
