Note: Dennison Born South West Coast Detroit Married first 3 jun 1805 St Antoine River Raisin Susanne Robert, b 12 Mar 1789 Assunption Sandwich bur 23 Aug 1812 St Antoine daug of Joseph Robert and Mary Joseph Godere, m 2nd 25 Sept 1814 Assumption Catherine Chamberland dau of Joseph Chamberland and Josephine Larose Bapt. 21 Feb. 1777, Detroit, MI RootsWeb Claude was from the Monroe, MI area. He was a War of 1812 Vet. St. Antonies Church Records record the name only as Couture. The French settlement and church called St. Antoines was established by the French settlers from Detroit and Montreal, Canada. Those of French descent who stayed in the Monroe area have kept their French names intact. Those who came to Ohio had to Americanize their names. In the Ottawa Co. records we can see both the French and American spelling for the above name used together. Claude moved to Ottawa Co. Ohio after 1835. His daughter Sophie was baptised in 1835 in Monroe, MI. This leads me to believe that Claude moved to Ottawa Co. after this. He settled in the area known as Toussaint, Ohio, also called Frenchtown. Claude Couture is found in the Fr. Dennison Books in the Ellis Library, Monroe, MI. His first wife was Susan Robert. Susan died in 1812. Claude Sr.'s 2nd wife was Catherine Camberland. The 1830 census for Monroe, MI. matches the know facts about this Family. In the 1840 census there are 2 Coutures listed in Ottawa Co., Ohio. 1) Catherine (40-50), 1male, 2 female (15-20), 1 male, 1 female (10-15), 2 males, 1 female (5-10), 1 male, 1 female (under 5). This I believe is Catherine Camberland Couture. She had 2 children under 5. (should be three children) There is a grave for a Glode (Claude) Couture d. 2-8-1840 in St. Joeseph's Cemetery, Toussaint, OH. This I believe is Claude Sr. This would make Catherine a widow in the 1840 census and make it possible for David to be concieved (Nov. 1839) before Claude Sr. died in February 1840. Catherine widow of Glode d 4-13-1862. In the 1844 Ottawa Co. School Enumeration Sheets, Catherine is listed as head of house, with her known sons in order by age, with David last. Claude Jr. lists only one son named Moses. These facts make me believe that Claude Sr. is our David's father. 2) Glode (Claude) Gascan Couture Jr. (30-40) 1 female (10-14), 1 male (under 5). Claude Jr. was born 11-17-1806, and d. 2-10-1883 had 2 wives. 1) Isabelle ( Betsey ) Jacks m. 7-29-1834 Erie, MI. ( marriage record) 2) Firgin Bodi. m 1837 Erie Co., MI. (marriage record) The name Claude and Glode were used interchangably in th records from St. Antonies. Glode is used in the death record of children of both Susann Robert and Catherine Camberland at the St. Antonies cemetery in Monroe, MI. These dates also match the dates in the Fr. Dennison Books. There are 2 more Claude Coutures from Ottawa Co. records, Claude Couture III son of Claude Jr., and Claude Wilson son of Claude III. The first son of Claude Sr. and Catherine Chamberland was David b 1816. Stanley Bourdo lists a girl child born May 15 1815, and dying in 1909. I believe that at some point before David was born in 1840 that this first David may have died and our David was named after him. There is a marriage record for him in Erie, MI. I have not found any children, or death records for this David Couture.
