  McDonald was living in Middlesex, New Jersey near Perth Amboy when he enlisted in the service, 11 November 1775. McDonald was a Fifer for one year in Captain John Conway's Company, First Battalion, Somerset; fifer State Troops; and fifer, Continental Army, serving the New Jersey and Pennsylvania Lines. McDonald assisted with the capture of the British vessel "Blue Mountain Valley," and was in the Battle of Three Rivers. Soon afterward he enlisted and served as Guide under Colonel Cooke of the Twelfth Pennsylvania Regiment and was involved in skirmishes at Strawberry Hill and Tappan. He enlisted December 1776, was commissioned Ensign in January 1777, then commissioned 1st Lieutenant 1 March 1777. McDonald was in skirmishes at Bonhampton, Piscataway, and Ash Swamp, where he was wounded in the thigh, and also in the Battle of Short Hills. He served until August 1777 when he resigned his commission, having served in Captain Fitz-Randolph's and Thomas Combs New Jersey Companies. McDonald then enlisted 1 May 1778 and served 2 years as Private and Express Rider in Captain Jonathan Forma's Company, Colonel John Conaway's New Jersey regiment, and was in the Battle of Monmouth. In 1781 or 1782 McDonald was commissioned Lieutenant and served 10 months in Captain John Ward's New Jersey Company.
  McDonald married his first wife, Mary Tingley about 1776 in Somerset County, NJ and then moved to Morris County, NJ. After a bit they relocated to Sussex County, NJ, and then to Mt. Bethel, Pennsylvania, then to Pittston, Luzerne County, PA near Wilkes-Barre, PA. While in Pittston, and married to 3rd wife, Hannah Valentine, McDonald made application for his war pension 13 April 1818. Some time after that they then moved to Huntleystown, PA, then to Fayette County, PA, and in 1827 moved to Harrison County, Ohio.
  In 1832, while still residing in Harrison County, OH, McDonald stated for the record that he was married 3 times and fathered 23 children. After his death, McDonald was buried in the Mt. Tabor Cemetery near Williamsport, OH. In 1851, McDonald's surviving children were: Margaret McKay, Archibald Campbell, Hannah Cyphers, Mary Campbell, McDonald Campbell, Rebecca Bond, and Mille Marwine. Paul Cyphers was the Administrator for McDonald's estate in1851 and Michael Cyphers was the Administrator later, in 1856, upon settling the estate of McDonald for Arched and Elias Campbell.

  Colonel Frelinghuysen's Muster Roll of 1778 Campbell, McDon'd, of Bernard's Township, from Corey's Company, light hair, age 19 years, 5 ft. 5 in. high, enlisted May 4th, joined Capt. Forman's Co., 4th Regiment, on May 21st. Muster roll of the recruits received from the 5th Battalion of Somerset County Militia in State of N. Jersey Com'd by Col. Fred'k Frelinghuysen who are to serve in the Continent'l Army 9 months from the date hereof.

  DAR Magizine page 396 Vol XXXVII July-December 1910 Wanted, names and all genealogical date concerning the parents of Arcibald McDonald and Alexander Campbell, who enlisted from Somerset Co., NJ, in the Rev. War. They lived before the war about half a mile from the Friends' Meeting House, which is situated two miles south of the village of Dover, in Randolph (formerly Mendham) township in Morris Co. NJ.
  "He was born in Middlesex County, New Jersey, February 12, 1754. The names of his parents and the place of their birth are not shown. "While residing in Middlesex County, New Jersey, near Perth Amboy, McDonald enlisted on November 11, 1775, and served one year as fifer in Captain John Conway's Company in Colonel William Winds' New Jersey regiment and assisted in the capture of the British vessel, 'Blue Mountain Valley' and was in the Battle of Three Rivers. "He was allowed pension on his application executed April 17, 1818, at which time he was living in Pittston, Luzerne County, Pennsylvania. In 1832 he was living in Harrison County, Ohio. "McDonald Campbell died in Marion (now Morrow) County, Ohio, March 20, 1845, leaving no widow. "In 1820 he stated that his wife (name not given) was thirty-three years of age, that she had two children by a former marriage, namely, Jesse Valentine aged thirteen years and Jane Valentine aged ten years, she being a widow when he married her, first name of her former husband not given. In 1820, McDonald Campbell stated that he and this wife had the following children: Isaac Wilson Campbell aged nine years, Sally Wealls Campbell aged five years, Almeda Campbell aged four years, Eleanor Campbell aged two years, and Elizabeth Campbell age not given. In 1832 McDonald Campbell stated that he had been married three times and that he was the father of thirteen boys and thirteen girls. "In 1851 the following were referred to as the only surviving children of McDonald Campbell: Margaret McKay, Archibald Campbell, Hannah Cyphers, Mary Campbell, McDonald Campbell, Rebecca Bond, and Millie Marwine. "In 1851 one Paul Cyphers (relationship to family not stated) who was the administrator of the estate of McDonald Campbell, applied in behalf of the above-mentioned children of the soldier who was living in 1851, for the arrears of pension due the soldier after his death. The claim was allowed. "One J. K. Cyphers was living in 1851, relationship not shown. "The papers in said claim contains no further data relative to the family of McDonald Campbell and no mention was made to this soldier having been related to President McKinley."

  After his first wife Mary Tingley died, McDonald Campbell married Nancy Stout. He left Nancy and lived with the widow Hannah Valentine who had two children, Jesse Valentine and Jane Valentine. It was McDonald & Hannah's children who were named in his petition for a pension for his Revolutionary War service. After Hannah's death, Nancy took him back. First families contested the distributiion of the pension monies after McDonald's death and successfully cut out the third family entirely. Petition was filed 22 October 1852 and the case was settled 8 May 1856 in Morrow Co., Ohio. See Chancery Records, Vol. 4, pp. 210-214.
