Was in the new town of Lansing, Michigan according to 1850 census operating a tavern (inn) known as The Ohio House. From records it appears that Moses bought the property in the fall of 1848. Perhaps the young family was forging ahead in the wilderness to make their fortune. They returned to Ohio in April of 1851, leaving the Ohio House in the care of another and owing money. It is not sure if that was the reason they left or not. Moses died Aug. 29, 1852 at his residence (family homestead) in Perkins Twp., leaving behind a wife and two small children. The cause of death is unknown. He is buried in the family plot at Oakland Cemetery, just a short distance from his home there. His gravestone has fallen over and is difficult to read. There is a hand pointing upwards, M A Stanbery 1820-1852 "There is rest in heaven" is the inscription. His family had to battle legally to reclaim the Ohio House after his death. From Circuit Court papers on file at the Michigan Archives Ingham Co 1855 #105 Stanbery Vs Daniel Clark & John I Redick the following story unfolds; Briefs; Primary School land Certificate #92 sold 29-Sept-1847 to F M McConnell November 3, 1848 Moses Stanbery bought same certificate from F M McConnell & F Wolfenburgh Moses signed over certificate to Daniel Clark to secure a loan of $100. Total sum to be repaid was $175. In April of 1851 Moses moved back to Ohio-left Ohio House in care of tenant John Christmas. November 26,1851 Clark threw Christmas out and took over boarding house. At the "lower town", as North Lansing was called and Main Street, in the south part of town, the land was dry and easily drained of any surface water, while the central portions were more level, and the clay subsoil held the water like a huge dish. For some time the first comers indulged the idea that the business would grow up and remain at the lower town and about Main St in the south part of town. The latter was quite a business through fare and before the winter of 1847-48 there were three hotels and a number of stores and shops in full operation upon it. The hotels were the National, on the east side of the river, the Michigan House on the northwest corner of Main and River Sts, west of the river, and the Benton House,Named for Thomas Benton,US Senator, on the northwest corner of Main St and Washington Ave-now the Everett House. Four other hotels were also erected the same season- Viz. the Lansing House, built of logs, on the corner opposite where it now stands; the Columbus House, on the ground now occupied by the Hudson House; the Ohio House, a third rate affair, near where the livery stable now stands, west of the Lansing House; and the Seymour House, at the lower town. Business continued and increased along Main St for about two years, when it began to remove to the center of town and concentrate in the vicinity of the new State Capital, until in the course of time it entirely left it's former habitat,...
