Note: Mary and Guy Diver Kathy Smith (View posts) Posted: 22 Jun 2000 3:04PM My connection with the Divers is also in Deerfield MI. My great grandmother, Mary Ellis Morse Diver, first married my great grandfather, Ladovia Lewis Smith. Their children were Ellen, Burr (my grandfather) and Ralph. After Ladovia died in his 30s, Mary remarried (I believe) Asa Diver of Deerfield. They had a son named Guy. Sometime in the 1920s, Mary (her daughter Ellen Kirshgessner and her two children) and Guy Diver left Deerfield and moved to Los Angeles. The family story is that Guy was a gun runner. He upolstered seats in cars and put guns in the seats and drove them over the Mexican border. The family legend is that Guy was killed by a Mexican general for sleeping with his wife. I am trying to track down this story and I still do not have exact proof of Mary Diver's death, although it appears to be in 1932 in Los Angeles County. I have found Asa Diver's grave in the Deerfield Public Cemetery. Kathy Smith Guy Diver BAPEPPER (View posts) Posted: 25 Nov 2000 12:27PM Edited: 9 Apr 2002 8:26PM Guy Diver was my Fathers'cousin, as his Mother, Julia was sister to Asa Diver. I have a copy of this newspaper clipping-here is the text. Detroiter Is Slain In Quarrel with General in Mexico City Killing in Fight Over Engineer's Wife at First Believed a Suicide; Officer in Flight Relatives of Guy Diver, Detroit engineer who was slain Sunday morning in Mexico City by his wife's cousin, Gen. Ramon Lopez, are being sought here by police. Reports from the Mexico capital were that Diver was shot by Gen. Lopez, once in charge of Federal troops in Northern Mexico, following a quarrel over Diver's wife, Emma, a daughter of the Oaxacan revolutionary leader, Che Gomez. Mexican officials searched for Gen. Lopez, who fled. Senora Diver was wounded in the shoulder dring the quarrel. Authorities said that the shooting took place in front of Diver's home. The wounded woman and her sister Elisa are said to have first attempted to pass his death off as a suicide but authorities became suspicious when they four four bullet wounds. Questioning produced the version that Diver had quarreled with his wife, slapped her and drew a pistol. Gen. Lopez, reported to be enamoured of Diver's wife, is said to have wrenched the pistol from him and fired eight shots. Diver, a civil engineer who gave Detroit as his home, is said to have been in Mexico several years. Police were unable to find any relatives or friends here. (Penciled on the bottom of this news clipping-Uncle Asa Diver's son, Guy Diver) Unknown what paper-must be a Detroit paper- or exactly when as there is no date. Guy Diver Kathy Smith (View posts) Posted: 26 Nov 2000 4:52AM How exciting to hear from you! The family story was that Guy was murdered by a Mexican General who caught him in bed with his wife! How I would love to have that newspaper clipping. What was the date on it? Guy was Asa Diver's son. But his mother was Mary Ellis Morse Smith Diver. She was Asa's second wife. Guy was born in 1901 (according to census records), the year that Asa died. Mary went to CA to live with her daughter Ellen and Ellen's two chidren (who had also been widowed) sometime before 1920. My grandfather, Burr Smith, was the half-brother of Guy. (His father was Lewis Ladovia Smith, Mary Ellis Morse Smith Diver's first husband). (Guy, Mary, Ellen, the two children) are living together in Los Angeles in the 1920 census. Do you know if Guy had any children? Mary died in 1932 (recently got her death certificate from CA.) I live in Perrysburg OH (about 45 min. from Deerfield). If you are interested in what I have on the Morse/Smith families, I would be most happy to share them with you. Please reply with your email address. THANKS AGAIN!
