3/12/1896 Monday THREE BURGLARIES Occurred in Adrian Saturday Night NEARLY ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS Secured from Albert White-The Other Amounts Were Small One daring robbery and two bold attempts at robbery occurred Saturday nigh just south of the city at the homes of Albert White, George Engel and Alvin Hamlin. At the latter two places the burgler was but slightly rewarded for his efforts, but at Mr White's house, he was much more successful. As the three robberies were committed at short intervals from each other, it is supposed one theif is responsible for them all. The first robbery was committed at the home of Geoge Engel, the dairyman, who lives at the south end of Dennis street across the track; an entrance was gained though a rear window. Mr Engel was awakened by a queer noise, and saw the theif in his bedroom where he was sleeping. He jumped out of bed and chased him out doors, but on account of sickness he did not give further chase. The theif however succeeded in getting away with what change Mr Engel had in his pants pockets, amounting to $1. From here the robber went across the fields to the home of Alvin Hamlin, who lives on Division street but a short distance from Al White's house. An entrance was made though a rear window. The theif entered Mr Hamlin's bedroom and was taking his pants off from the bed when the poket book fell out on the floor awaking him and scaring away the thief. He then visited the home of Al White who lives with his family on the Trent road, southeast of the city, an entrance being gained through the kitchen window. As there were a few potted plants on the inside of this window, they were taken out and placed upon the porch, and were, of course, frozen when found. The bold robber went into Mr White's bedroom, and after searching his clothes, secured between $90 and $100 in cash. Mr White knew nothing of the affair until he arose Sunday morning and found the money gone and the window pried open. At each of these places, after gettinginto the house the doors were unfastened from the inside by the thief so that a hasty retreat could be made if necessary. It was one of the boldest series of robberies that has been committed in this city for some time, and was no doubt done by some one who is an expert at the business. Sheriff Wilson on being notified of the robberies sent Turnkey Hayiland and Under Sheriff Ferguson to investigate the matter, but there was not the slightest clue to the perpetrators found on the premises.
