Marriage in Monroe County Elizabeth Chamberland-Herbert Deloil Nov. 11, 1832 GenForum Robert Chamberlain Thanks to some great help from others, we believe we have traced the ancestry of Joseph Chamberland as follows: 1. René Chamberland/Catherine David 2. Simon Chamberland/Marie Boileau 3. Gabriel Chamberland/Catharine Allaire 4. Jean Baptiste Chamberland/Marie Josèphe Therrien 5. Joseph Chamberland/Marie Louise Paré 6. Joseph Chamberland/Josephine LaRose (aka Josephine Secnix; Joseph's 2nd wife) We have, as yet, no idea who the parents were of Josephine LaRose (aka Josephine Secnix) other than parish records state Josephine's mother was Indian/Native American. If anyone has info on this Josephine it would be appreciated. Thanks. rwcdsc@yahoo.com This line shows his father, Joseph born 1747. Perhaps the two were confused and this Joseph has a birth date about 1785? RootsWeb First wife, Marie Joseph MONET Married: 23 Sep 1793 in L'Acadie, St. Jean Co.,Quebec, Canada Author: RWChamberlain -RootsWeb Surnames: Chamberland The Joseph Chamberland who md Josephine LaRose (parents of Louis, Catherine, etc.) was the son of Joseph Chamberland and Marie Louise Par, according to the record of his marriage 23Sept1793 to his 1st wife, Josephte/Josephine Monet, who died 13May1794. Joseph's marriage record to Josephine LaRose 9Feb1798 (aka Josephine Secnix) stated he was the widower of Josephine Monette [ie Monet] but didn't give Josephine LaRose's parents' names. I have more info on the Chamberland side if interested but nothing more yet on Josephine LaRose. “Joseph Chamberlan, m. Josephine Secnix, 19 Feb 1798. Both of this parish. He was the widower of Josephine Monette. (Notation in entry signifies there is other text associated with both bride and groom, but which is undecipherable.)” [P. 47] From Ancestry This information is directly quoted from a forum on genealogy.com found by googling "josephine larose" chamberlain : The following information is taken from my research database (records of the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society).Joseph Chamberland, b. 1747, Detroit, MI, d. 16 Sep 1832, Monroe, MI.He m. 19 Feb 1798 in Detroit, Josephine "Josette" Larose, b. 1770, d. 14 Jan 1829, Monroe, MI (buried that date at St. Antoine, River Raisen which is at Monroe, also called Frenchtown), with 9 children b. between c1795 and 1811, probably all in Detroit: Louis, Catherine, Julia, Mary Louisa, Peter, Joseph, Elisabeth Ann, Frances and Elisabeth.Josette is recorded as "fille d'une sauvagesse", that is, a daughter of a savage. There is also record of an earlier marriage to Josephine Moret, but nothing is known of her.It is believed that Joseph settled at River Raisen about 1813, which was during the time of the War of 1812 with England. The family is listed there in several census & voter list records beginning 1820.Some descendants use the surname of Chamberlain. Joseph Chamberland's parents are unknown.A 1-page lineage with descendants in one line (unproven daughter of these parents, Mary Louise b. 16 Apr 1801, in Detroit, who m. Andrew Murray), was submitted by Danell Aukerman of Santa Clara, CA, and published in Chamberlain Chain, Vol. 13, p. 20, Branch 76, which you can obtain from the Editor, Carolyn Weidner [Email: weidnerc@home.com].Additional data can also be found in World Family Tree CD-ROM #3-5692, submitted by Barb Pepper of Parma, Jackson Co., MI, and in her subsequent correspondence with me.Her Diver ancestor from Canada married Louis, b. c1795, eldest son of Joseph Chamberland, in Monroe, MI, 5 Oct 1824.I very little information on the other children of Joseph, but would like to learn more. Joseph Chamberland may well be descended from the prolific Canadian immigrant ancestor Simon Chamberland (1636-1688) of Quebec, whose descendants spread far and wide throughout Canada and the U. S., but I've not been able to prove any connection, as yet. Anyone seriously researching Chamberlain - Chamberland - Chamberlan families in early Michigan territorial records is advised to begin their search by visiting the Burton Historical Collection at the Detroit Public Library.Their vast collection may well contain information on this Joseph Chamberland.Be advised, though, of some restrictions and difficulties accessing this collection, though it is open to the public, due to a recent flood which damaged many early records in the basemenet, budgetary difficulties, and greatly increased demand for services associated with the 300th anniversary of Detroit to be celebrated this year, 2001.Early Catholic church records in Detroit (all the way back to the founding of Detroit) are also available in a local Detroit church. An important source cited for information on this Chamberland/Chamberlain family is the Genealogy of Down River Families (the Monroe area and points north are commonly termed "Down River", being situated along the Lake Erie shore not far south of the opening of the Detroit River), which I've not seen, but which should be available in Detroit, Monroe & other leading libraries. You may also wish to contact the Monroe County Genealogical Society directly through the Internet. Please contact me via Email [jbparker@provide.net] if you have any additional questions. In particular, I'd like to learn more about your connection with this interesting family and any other information you might wish to share.
