Notes
a. Note:   N56 The 1855 NYS Census lists him as a mulatto; not, however, his daughter Charlotte and her little girl Mary Elizabeth.
1865 New York State Census gives great detail on the farm owned by Charles F. of which he farmed a small part, the rest being farmed by his son, Andrew J. An itinerant minister needed some other occupation to make ends meet. His portion of the farm was 36 acres, of which 3 were plowed, 6 in pasture, and 10 in meadow. He produced 6 tons of hay, 30 bushels of grain on 2 acres, 18 bushels of potatoes on 1/2 acre, and 4 bushels of apples from 15 trees. His stock consisted of 4 cows, 2 calves, 2 pigs, one of which was slaughtered yielding 300 pounds of pork, 2 l sheep for shearing, 2 lambs, and poultry giving $10 worth of eggs. He produced 400 pounds of butter. This was a subsistance farm for a man then 74 years of age living with 2 widowed daughters, and a grand daughter, a son and his wife and 3 children. In 1825 Charles Felix Barnett was licensed to preach the gospel and there were very few of the older settlers in Broome and Chenango Counties who did not know this old Methodist minister. He had eleven children, three sons and eight daughters who grew up to be men and women, and when he died in 1885, ninety two children, grand children and great-grand children attended his funeral.
It is quite likely that Simon and Margaret had more children than Charles Felix during the seventeen years before they came to Greene. One history says their son Felix was the "sole survivor of a numerous family" and we find mention of two young men and two young women with them in New York City in the 1810 Census. No record has been found of them in Greene. They may not have been their children or may have died in the Yellow Fever Epidemic in New York City at that time.
