Note: 5 In Reply to: Re: Moore's Chester County PA by Jim Moore of 30874 I am looking for a Mary Ann Moore b Feb 17, 1817 in chester county, PA. "I think she might have been the daughter of a Samson (census spelling) or Sampson who might have been the son of John Moore/Phoebe Gray. All of these came from East Nottingham, Chester County. If anybody recognises any of these people could you please get back to me. I'd really really appreciate it. Trying to find a Mary Ann Moore is like looking for a needle in a hay stack one straw at at ime." Thanks. Carolyn Scott at [email protected] Mary Ann Moore was from Chester County, Pennsylvania and was the 3rd wife of Humphrey Riddell. After his second wife Rachel dies, he moved to Pennsylvania where he met and married Mary Ann. He already had 2 children by Rachel. Their first child, Mary Jane, was born in Chester County, Pennsylvania March 10, 1836. They moved to Wilmington, Clinton County, Ohio sometime after that and their next child, Harriet, was born there November 5, 1838. Mary Ann outlived Humphrey by 13 years, dying December 31, 1885. They had 10 children. Mary died at age 69 and was buried in Millersburg Cemetery. ---------------------------------------------------------------------Carolyn Found this at the Millersburg Library. January 5, 1886 Obituary: Death has again come among us. This time laying his hand on one of our oldest and most respected citizens, Mrs. H. Riddell, more familiarly known as Mother Riddell, who passed away on last Thursday night at about 10. Mrs. Riddell leaves a large family of relatives and a very large circle of friends who mourn her loss. Her remains were interred in the cemetery here on Saturday afternoon, after a service conducted by Rev. McCown at the residence of Mr. John H. Turner in Duncan at 2pm. The steady pour of rain kept many from going but not withstanding this fact, a large concourse of sympathizing friends followed her remains to their last resting place. Among people from out of town were L.P. Riddell (my line), Washington County, Iowa; Mrs. Frank Vernon, Independence, Mo. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aledo Democrat January 15, 1886 obituary - "survivors 10 children - 3 are deceased - only child named is Mrs. J.H. Turner near Millersburg."--------------------------------------------- Feb 2007 - Riddell Message Board I have been looking for Moore's in the Chester County, PA and Cecil County, MD area. Recently the Chester County Historical Society published a list of poor children attending school from 1810 to 1850. In it, I found the William Moore, b. 1819, I was looking for, who was the brother to Mary Ann Moore, b. 1817. This is the only Mary Ann I have found born in 1817. They were the children of Sampson Moore of East Nottingham. This is probably the Mary Ann Moore who married Humphrey Riddell. Kathryn Payne--------------------------------------- I found this historical document that contains information about our ancestor. I think you will find this very interesting. Just click on the link below. This page has Samson Moore and Mary Ann Moore in East Nottingham, Chester Co. I kept thinking Mary Ann Moore might be our Mary Ann's mother, with the father passed away. Both Mary Ann Moore & Samson Moore (heads of households) were between the ages of 26-45. They both had female children under the age of 10 (Mary Ann was b. 1817).---------------------- OBITUARYMary Ann Moore, was born Feb. 27, 1817, in Chester Co., Penn. She was married to Humphrey Riddell in 1935. In 1838 they moved to Ohio where they lived until 1865. They then moved to Mercer County, Ill., and she has resided here ever since. About two hours before 1885 took its flight sister Riddell's spirit departed to the world of light. Her husband passed over the river in 1872; and since that time she has lived most of the time with one of her daughters in Aldedo. For a short time previous to her death she resided with her daughter, Mrs. J. H. Turner, near Millersburg. She was the mother of ten children; three of whom preceded her to the other world. Mother Riddell was converted and united with the Methodist episcopal Chruch when 14 years of age, and has ever been a devoted, earnest Christian, and was highly respected by all who knew her. In conversation with the writer a short time before her death, when speaking of her affliction, she said, "I am satisfied the Lord will do what is right." She has left a blessed record for her children. D. S. There is nothing to substantiate any information other than she married Humphrey and her life with him... ---------------------------------------------------------------------Carolyn Found this at the Millersburg Library. Humphrey originally lived in Cecil County, Maryland. After the death of his 2nd wife, he moved into Pennsylvania and married Mary Ann Moore. He moved to Ohio in 1836 and continued there until 1837 to 1855, when he moved to Mercer County, Illinois. He worked at shoemaking until 1852, when he took charge of the infirmary for the poor in Clinton County, Ohio. He continued there until 18555 when he went West and commenced farming. In the spring of 1858 he took charge of the infirmary for the poor in Mercer County, Illinois where he stayed until 1868. He then moved to his farm and lived there till his death, which occurred suddenly on the morning of January 24, 1872. He was alive and apparently well only a few minutes before he was found dead in his bed. He was a member of the Methodist Church for 50 years. Obituary in the Weekly Record, dated January 31, 1872: Mr. Humphrey Riddell of Duncan Township died very suddenly at his residence on Wednesday morning last. On the day previous, he had been to this place, and seemed to be in his accustomed health. On Wednesday morning not feeling very well, he remained in bed after the family had arose. Soon after one of the children went to his room to call him, and found that he was dying. His disease is supposed to be apoplexy or hear disease. Mr. Riddell will be remembered by many of our readers as the popular Superintendent of the County Farm, in which capacity he became acquainted with many of our citizens from all parts of the County, and gained many friends by his able management of affairs as Superintendent. He was in his 71st year. At the time of his death, he was residing in Duncan Township, Mercer County, Illinois. After Humphrey's death, his widow Mary Ann Riddell, lived with her daughter and son-in-law, Emily and Frank Vernon, in Aledo. Humphrey and his family are all buried at Oak Ridge Cemetery, Millersburg Township, Mercer County, Illinois. There is no town there any more, only several homes and farms. Not stores, etc. But the cemetery appears well kept. The cemetery is located on a road leading out or into town, maybe on the NW side. A Riddell relative who lived in Mercer County, said the Riddells pronounced their names as either Rid'dell (Riddle) or Riddell'. I had heard that also when doing research at the local historical society. In the Cecil County, Maryland Marriage Licenses 1777-1840 he is listed as Umphrey Riddell who married Rachel Crouch March 29, 1827. Central Pennsylvania Marriages 1700-1896 by Charles A Fisher: Mary Moore m Riddell ----------------------------------------August 2008 from Ron Cofiellra: Emily Tyson, Rosanna's child by Benjamin Tyson, was born probably between March 1802 (calculated from parents' marriage date) and March 1804 (named in her father's will). She married Humphreys Riddell by Baltimore Co. license dated Nov. 19, 1825 (IGI Individual Record). Humphrey Riddell was born in Cecil Co. on Nov. 25, 1801, and died on Jan. 24, 1871; Emily died on May 23, 1826 (IGI Individual Record). "Humphrey Riddle, removed without certificate, 1827" from the Baltimore City Station of the Methodist Episcopal Church ("Deaths and Removals Gleaned from Baltimore City Station Class Lists 1809 to 1829," Methodist Records of Baltimore City, Maryland, Volume 1: 1799-1829, by Henry C. Peden, Jr., 1994, p. 169). Umphrey Riddle married Rachel Crouch on or about March 29, 1827 in Cecil Co. (Rachel might have been the daughter of John Crouch and Cornelia Chrisfield, or the daughter of Nathaniel Crouch and Zeporah Chrisfield.) ------------------------------------- United States Census, 1850 for Humphrey Riddell Name: Humphrey Riddell Residence: Wilmington, Clinton, Ohio Age: 49 years Calculated Birth Year: 1801 Birthplace: Maryland Gender: MaleFilm Number: 20216 Digital GS Number: 4191058 Image Number: 00382 Line Number: 24 Dwelling House Number: 513 Family Number: 513: Household Gender Age Humphrey Riddell M 49y Mary A Riddell F 33y Johns L Riddell M 19y Mary J Riddell F 14y Harriet M Riddell F 12y Silas H Riddell M 9y Levi P Riddell M 7yJames L Riddell M 5y Lettitia J Riddell F 3y Benjamin J Riddell M 1y Note: Posted by: Carolyn Scott (ID *****1299) Date: July 20, 2007 at 21:20:4 |
