Note: 1850 theylived in Penn, Morgan, Ohio Death notcie. The Herald. Joseph Metcalf died at his residence in Marion township. on the 2nd ___ in the 87th year of his age. He was one of the early settlers of the county. My DNA match of this line had her as Unknown Moore. Here is her obituary. Margaret E. Metcalf, nee Shaffer, was born on May 22, 1818, near Cambridge, Ohio, died Feb 16, 1905, aged 86. She came to Morgan County in 1829, and lived near Pennsville until 1850, when she married Joseph Metcalf. They had five children; Wiliam H., Sarah J., Thomas J., Isaac S., and John W., only John died before her. At age 18 she united with the Methodist church at Pennsville, and remained steadfast in faith until death. Actually, this is NOT the same wife as the one who died in 1850. She married the year wife number 1 died! But, Joseph was already 60 when he began having children with Margaret, who was 30 years younger, doesn't make much sense. Unclear if she really married the same person. 1870 census makes it clear he was the same Joseph. He was 79, his wife was 27 years younger, and living with them were five teenagers born since 1850. 1870 census. Joseph Metcalf 79 or 99. farmer. 1000, 700, born Pennsylvania Margaret E 52 Ohio William H 13 works on farm Ohio Sarah 17 at achool Ohio Jacob 14 works on farm Ohio Isaac S works on farm Ohi John W Ohio In the 1850 census, Joseph is in Penn, Morgan, Ohio, and his 22 year old daughter Phebe lives with him. In 1840 he was in Penn, Morgan, Ohio. 5 people lived in his household. 1 male 50-59. 1 female 50-59. 1 male 15-19 2 female 15-19 2 females 10-14. This tells us that Joseph and Ms. Moore had four daughters, not one daughter. 1830 they lived in Smith, Belmont, Ohio. There were EIGHT people. 1 female 40-49 1 male 40-49. 1 male 5-9 1 female under 5 2 females 5-9 2 females 10-14. Actually, Joseph and Ms. Moore had FIVE daughters. Phoebe was the female under 5; she was the youngest.
