a. Note:   Much of this comes from local records, the evidence is contradictory. He had land in Alsace and Cumru, and in Cumru later. Some of it from his probably brother Samuel.

One wonders what Benneville Keim had to do with this family. I also have a lot of DNA matches suggesting descent from Benneville Keim.
Keim inlaws also had a lot to do with Philip's tentative father or his wife that noone can give her a last name. They seem to have done religious proselytizing together and the Burkharts are buried in his private family graveyard.
For one thing, though it appears that he owned land at one point in Alsace, Philip is often in Reading when he was supposed to have been in Alsace, and it would seem that Philip and Barbara met in Reading. The vague location of their marriage comes from the ambiguous notes of a Berks Co Dehart researcher. Sometimes, too, marriages were on more than one church register. Schwarzwald church was in one of the towns around Reading, not in it.
One of the better clues to Philip Burkhart's family identity comes from three Burkharts who were weavers and were of the Reformed family from Alsace lived in Reading next door to Henry WAgner at the time when Philip and Barbara would have met. Though the available evidence suggests that these particular Burkharts were cousins and not immediate family.

Could this be a clue to Philip Burkhart's relations?
  1790 census: Wagner, Henry 39 1 1 6 Burkhart, Jacob 39 1 - 3 Burkhart, John 39 1 5 3 all Reading, Berks. (Philip Burkhart married a daughter of Henry Wagner.) ------------------------------------
Here is what I know of my own Burkhart line: Philip Burkhart of Alsace m on 7/23/1804 Barbara Wagner of Alsace, at Trinity Lutheran or Schwarzwald Church.
Barbara Wagner was b 3/14/1775, d 12/27/1855, of consumption,in Reading, and was daughter of Henry and Elizabeth Wagner.
For the clues I have on the identity of Henry and Elizabeth Wagner, see Wagner notes.
The 1800 census shows Philip Burkhart on his plantation in Alsace township, with a woman over 25 (he was also over 25), a girl under 10, and three servants. It is possible he was previously married.
Samuel Burkhart purchased a "plantation" or large farm, from John Egie, in Alsace township, in 1794 or 1795. John Egie mentions the $ or pounds 3805 that he sold it for, to be divided among his children, in his will which was written on Sep 9, 1794, probated May 3, 1796.
The Berks Co deeds index gives April 23, 1795, Samuel Burkhart was deeded land by John Eagle, Alsace Tp, 1795: Vol 14, p 356.
He bought land in Alsace township on Mar 12 1796 from Philip Seidel, vol 15, p 91. He got more land from John Egle on Sep 7, 1796, "Asgmt", vol 15, p 296. This Samuel Burkhart appears in the deeds indexes in 1792, when on Nov 9 1792 he acquired land from John Ludwig in or of Bern and Cumru townships. vol 13, p 100.
On FEb 23, 1795, he acquired land from George Hill in Cumru township, vol 14, p 234. On May 13, 1797, he acquired land in Cumru township from Michael Meyer. vol 15, p 523.
On Feb 24, 1802, he acquired land from John Bishop, of or in Alsace township, vol 19, p 59. In the following transactions, other people acquired land from Samuel Burkhart.
On Sep 7, 1796, Adam Leiss acquired land from Samuel Burkhart "Asgmt", vol 15, p 296, and he also acquierd land in Alsace township, vol 15, p 297.
On July 30, 1798, Micael Meyer of or in Cumru township acquired land from Samuel Burkhart. Vol 16, p 221.
**** The following month, Samuel deeded land to Philip in Alsace.
****** On Apr 16, 1801, Samuel Bell acquired possibly two pieces of land from Samuel Burkhart, in Bern twp, vol 18, p 197. On Sep 25, 1801, Philip Spohn acquired land from Samuel Burkhart "By Shff", in Cumru township, vol 18, p 391. On Aug 10, 1799, William Witman Jr acquired land from Samuel Burkhart "by shff" Shff docket, vol 2, p 103. On Aug 17, 1801, Philip Spohn acquired land in Cumru township, from Samuel Burkhart, shff docket, vol 2, p 151.
*****On Aug 31, 1798, Smauel Burkhart deeded to Philip Burkhart land in Alsace township, vol 16, p 228. On April 24, 1805, Philip Burkhart acquired a deed from "Samuel Burkhart Est By Shff", in Alsace township, Shff docket vol 2, p 227. Also on April 24, 1805, is the entry Philip Burkahrt Admr By Shff al to Philip Burkhart, Alsace twp, Shff docket, vol 2, p 227. On Feb 2, 1802, Philip Burkhart acquired land in Alsace township, from John Bishop, vol 19, p 59. He and Samuel both acquired this piece of land, and their names each bear "al" meaning and others in the index.
****** On Jan 26, 1805, Philip Burkhart acquired land from Henry Baum in Alsace township vol 21, p 86 On Sep 24, 1810, Philip Burkhart acquired land from Abraham Keller, vol 24, p 297. On Jul 26, Philip Burkhart acquired land from Penrose Wily in or of Ruscomb manor township, vol 30, p 436.
On July 26, 1820, Philip Burkhart acquired land from Sarah Wily, "Release", vol 31, p 379. On May 1, 1823, Philip Burkhart acquired the following pieces of land - or so it looks. It reads Grantor: Michael Madeira Exr Alsace Township 1822 vol 32 p 675 Grantor: John Barr ux Alsace township 1812 vol 32 p 671. Grantor: Frederick Yeager by Exr Alsace township, 1823, vol 32, p 673. On August 18, 1804, Philip Burkhart acquired land from "Michael Madeira By Shff" in Alsace township, shff docket, vol 2, p 221.
A number of transactions seem to have been carried out by or done in connection with Philip Burkhart's estate.   Probably some of these people were involved in the administration of the estate, and others may have been in-laws who collected part of the legacy, possibly some of the land was sold of the estate. In his will, Philip Burkhart includes a description of sorts of his holdings: "my forge, mill houses, and lands belonging to the same together with the stock and house-hold furnitures upon the premises...as much wood off the premises as may be necessary for the use of the forge - or in case ...shold not be sufficient to mantain her and the children comfortably she shall ... be at liberty to sell off as much wood from the lands as together with the ___ will enable her to maintain herself and the family". He willed $1000 to each of his daughters, and authorized in case the sale of his personal propertyand profits of his real estate, etc., should not be sufficient to pay his daughters their legacies, the sale of sufficient wood or land to supply the needed amount. Also, his wife was to be paid $400 per year until Lydia came of age, then $350 per year until Ann came of age, then $300 per year for life - unless she remarries. Balance to his son - when he comes of age. Some items in the detailed inventory of his estate included furniture to WELL stock a house, a silver watch, silver spoons and ___, alot of looking glasses, lots of bureaus and tables and chairs, multiple desks, $60 in cash, a walnut table (in addition to a dining table and a long table with benches) a lot of spinning wheels and a lot of yarn, one horse carriage, one windmill, a wagon, another wagon, wagon with coal body, a team of 5 horses, and possibly yet another wagon with it, one hourse, one colt, 4 cows, 3 hogs, 7 pigs. one bond due June 1 1820 principal $600 amt 3 years months $138 total $738, 1 Note principal $52.00, 10 shares in the Farmers Bank of Reading on which is paid $300.00, total $4542.57 value of inventory of his personal estate. He got $1579.87 "balance in favor of estate" after proceeds, moneys collected, paid out, and $6544.81 from I don't get where, and total balance $8124.68 I guess value of the estate. Samuel Baird and Ch. H. Witman were witnesses to the will.
My knowledge of the children of PHilip and Barbara Burkhart is very vague. Barbara Burkhart's will mentions six children living at the time that she died. She specifically cites only John W. Burkhart, and repeatedly mentions her daughters. Barbara Burkhart's death certificate lists four children; Elizabeth, Maria, John W., and Lydia Ann. Philip Burkhart's will mentions specifically only Lydia AND Ann, and is unclear on whether another daughter was younger, it looks like Ann was the youngest. Doesn't mention how John ranked in that.
PHilip Burkhart's estate records cite a payment of $1000 on April 14, 1826, to George L. something like Housen or Housenn for his wife's legacy. On Aug 3, 1827, a payment of $1000 was made to John Kean for his wife's legacy. Philip Burkhart willed $1000 to each of his daughters to be paid to the minor daughters when they reached age 21. Barbara Burkhart's will in addition to mentioning six children and naming John W. Burkhart, mentioned son in law John Keen or Reen or Resn or something like that, and a grand daughter, Mayanttor Feger, nearly as I could make out. In 1844, Daniel Feger made a petition for a guardian for his daughter Margaret. Jacob Goodinau, Goodenau, was appointed guardian for her. The petition read that "his daughter Margaret Feger is entitled to a legacy out of the estate of Philip Burkhart her grandfather, dec. and is a minor under 14 years of age, and has no guardian appointed to take care of her estate." Signed, looks like Daniel G. Feger. Mattias V. Richards was appointed by the court as guardian for John W. Burkhart. Little concern seems to have been paid to the girls, and the farm was left in trust for John.
In 1826, John Burkhart, being over 14 at that time, petitioned the court to allow him to choose his own guardian in place of Mattias V. Richards, who wrote a note that he was unable to carry out the duties of guardian and relinquished the role, and John Kuhn was appointed guardian - this seems to have happened in 1828. There was a release in the deeds index, Nov 9, 1843, to Daniel Feger, Asgn, Release, F 6 625. There were two releases, August 15 and August 20, 1831, in the deeds index, to John Bickel, ADmr al, Rel of Legacy, C 3 535 and 539. There were three releases in the deeds index for John W Burkhart, from the Philip Burkhart estate, July 15, 1844, G 7 121, 122 1nd 123. Logically that would make John born in 1822, only he was over 14 in 1826. Elizabeth b abt 1808, Reading, Scwarzwald. We are now uncertain that photo of him still at the beginning of the Dehart page was him; that is probably John Kohler the father of the husband of one of John Dehart's brothers. But here is a PHOTO of John Dehart: I am trying to trace who these people were.

Herbrechtingen and Jacob the weaver Burkharts This family is linked by both Jerry Burket, from whom most of the following info comes, and Sharon Martin, to both Troy's Andreas son of Georg family, and Jacob Burkhart the weaver of Reading. I haven't seen or heard any evidence that Troy's family (from Georg Burkhart of Cumru) is Georg born 1703 in Herbrechtingen.
Two sources are Bess Burkett Hill's The Burkhardt-Burkett family in America: a history of the ancestors of Johann Jacob Burkhardt, which apparently is an unpublished or semi-published manuscript, someone sent me a Adobe version ofit, and Ellis, Nina Detter, Burket/Burkett/ Burkhardt family tales and trails, 1649-1990, Bountiful, Utah: Family History Publications. See Jerry Burkhart's page <http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/3549>

Johann Georg Burckhardt b 10/14/1703 Troy Burkhart says Sharon Martin told him that this was Georg the father of Andreas Sr, Georg, Sebastian and Catherine of Berks Co, and I think Jerry Burkitt had such an idea, too. From checking all the above sources, I can't find any substantiation for this idea, and Sharon Martin has been too busy travelling around the globe since last November to tell me where she got it! I asked Jerry Burkett - who can't seem to focus on it. Anna Marie Burckhardt b 7/13/1705 d 1706 Andreas "Andrew" Burckhardt III b 12/12/1706 Johannes Burckhardt b 9/17/1708 father of Johan Dedric who came to PA and gave rise to a line of Burkett's.   children by second wife: Johann Martin Burckhardt b 6/22/1722 d 1722 Margaretha Burckhardt b 6/12/1723 Johann Michael Burckhardt b 7/10/1725
Jerry Burkett also puzzlingly places in this family (a child of the above, as nearly as I can tell as Johannes, the following. Further, he has Johan Jacob Burckhardt, Johannes Burckhardt and Johan Georg in a row as if all of them out of this family somehow matter - but he doesn't explain it. He seems to say and I think he said outright at some point that Johan Georg was Georg of Berks Co father of Andreas, etc. of Troy's line.
Johannes Burckhardt b 9/17/1708 m Katrina Herbert. Both died in Germany. Confusion over whether they ever came to US and then returned to Germany.
Ellis has Katharine Herbert or Hebert, a French maiden, desc from Huguenots. (doesn't say how we know this. ) Johannes Dedric came first to New WOrld in 1741, then Katrina and Johannes Burket arrived 27 yrs later on 6 Oct 1767, on the Hamilton, from Rotterdam to Philadelphia. JOhannes Burcket signed the ship's roster.
Ellis says Polly Kountz, Koontz, Coontz, kunz was the daughter of Jacob Kountz, of Prussian ancestry. A talented musician and skilled pianist. At the time the piano was a new instrument and only affluent families could afford one. "She was a delicate lady bred to the aristocracy of Europe". "Family tradition reports Polly (Kountz) Burket to be of noble descent with deep familial roots in Prussia. Delicate and of artistic nature, she was accustomed to more refined living than was to be found in the New World. (though it isn't clear they ever left Philadelphia) Polly did not adapt to the hardships offered in America. In later years, she persuaded Johan to return with her to their honeland.
They had a son, Johan Dedric. . Johan Dedric m b unknown, m Polly Koonz. An accomplished pianist. Brought some trappings of her life in Europe such as nice china to Philadelphia. She couldn't adjust to life in the new world and they returned to Germany and died there. They had fled in early 1700's to Amsterdam, Holland. Their son, Jacob Burkhart, born there while awaiting emigration to America. Arrived on Loyal Judith, 1741. Settled in Philadelphia. Not known if they ever left Philadelphia before they returned to Germany, where they died.
  .
Jacob b around 1740-1, Amsterdam, Holland m Barbara Fisher, daughter of William Fisher IV and Sarah Coleman.. William was mayor of Philadelphia in 1773, and they were the grandparents of Samuel Rhodes Fisher, who was founder of Austin Colony and Texas statesman. Ellis lists nine more children born to Polly and JOhan Dedrick Burkhart. Jacob the eldest son married Barbara Fisher, Quaker and daughter of a mayor of Philadelphia, and descendants were founders of Texas. Ellis's book traces Johannes' descendants (Johan Dedric's), who took the name Burkett.
Johann "John" Jacob Burckhardt b 10/9/1712 Herbrechtingen, Germany d 4/21/1794, Reading, Berks, PA, He was orphaned at age 10 and probably raised by his grandfather Schneider in Flenheim and trained there to be a weaver. m 10/1751 Switzerland Sabina Dorthea Naegeli b 12/28/1721 Switzerland d 1/1/1796. Jacob Burkhart Sr was a master weaver, and was in Reading by 1762, when he is on a tax list. His will indicates this Jacob was married to a Sabina Dorothea. I need to see the proof that he is this individual in this family, also any immediate relatives b ca 1780 named Phillip. Phillip married the daughter of a man listed immediately before Jacob Burkhart on the 1790 census. There is considerable confusion about Jacob Sr's childrne. One version has he had just one son who lived, John Jacob b in Switzerland, and he in turn had Jacob Jr of the trio in Reading. Another is that Jacob Sr had two sons; John Jacob, and Jacob. Yet another is John GEORGE was the only surviving son of Jacob Sr, married the Fox woman, everything.
Roberta Wunder's version 1. John George Burkhart b Aug 21, 1753 Canton of Berne, Switzerland. d Jan 2, 1847, Hessville, Sandusky Co, OHio m Jan 1776, Trin Luth Ch, Reading, Mary Barbara Fox. She b 5/28/1758 Reading d there abt Aug 19 1791. He m Catharine Fox 11/11/1792 Trin Luth Ch, Reading, she b 10/1/1773 Reading d 6/16/1862 Sandusky Co Ohio. They moved after 1796 when Sabina Dorothea died, to Lancaster Co, PA, then to Ohio. John Burkhart whichever son he really was was a personal body guard to Gen. George Washington and the family still has the sword he carried. By both wives, he had 17 children. Margaret Catharine Burkhartdt b 9/13/1759 Trin Luth Ch Reading, PA. d unknown. bapt 1755 Trin Luth Ch; records inconsistent John Burkhardt b 8/11/1756 d 1756 JOhn Jacob Burkhardt b 5/8/1758 Reading, Berks Co PA d unknown 2. Jerry Burkett's version: John b 21 Aug 1753. This I believe is the son mentioned in his will Margaret Catherine Burckhardt d infancy 1755 John George Burckhardt d in infancy buried 1756 John Jacob Burckhardt, Jr buried 1758. This is Bud Coplen's version, too.
But the 1790 census shows Jacob Burckhardt Jr closely associated with (living with or next to) both Jacob Burkhart, sr, and John Burkhart, indicating he had a son Jacob who lived. They wouldn't have likelyt bee called Jr and Sr if not father and son.
  John Burckhardt, Sr b 8/21/1753 Canton Basel, Switzerland d 1/2/1847, Reading? m (1) 1/30/1776 Mary Barbara Fox, b 5/28/1758 Reading PA, dau David Fox, Jr and Catherine Geiss) d 8/19/1791 m (2) 11/11/1792 Catherine Fox, her sister, b 10/1/1773 ?Reading, PA d 6/16/1862.
  4. Bessie Burkett Hill's version.
John b 8/21/1753 in Canton Basel, Switzerland, which was just over the Rhine River from Wurtemburg. The family arrived in Philadelphia 10/1/1754. Jacob is on first list of taxables in Reading, 1759, master weaver. Margaret Catherina b 1755 Reading, died infancy John George b 1757 Reading died as infant John Jacob bapt 1758. Altogether 3 sons and 4 daughters. Jacob Sr alone was taxed in 1767 and 1768. In 1779 both Jacob Jr and John are listed as partners in business and taxed accordingly through 1785. Notice that if "John" or "Jacob" or whoever he was was born in 1753, his son could not have been grown in time to pay taxes in 1779.
She cinches it by quoting John Jacob Sr's grave inscription.
"John Jacob Burkhart b October 9, 1712. father was Andrew Burkhardt, master mason of Wurtemburg, Germany. His mother was ___(can't read my writing) Schneider. married to Sabina Dorothea Negeli for 42 years and 6 (I think) months. Seven children - 3 sons and 4 daughters. Two sons and one daughter still living and married. died April 12 1794 aged 81 years 6 months 2 days."
I can't seem to find where anyone has what happened to John Jacob and any children; most have him died unknown.
Hill follows the descendants of John, and the Fox sisters and their umpteen children - most or all took the name Burkett.
Jacob Burkett John Burkett, Jr Samuel Burkett David Burkett b 1782 George Burkett 15 other Burkett's.
Jerry Burkett says that Samuel was a Quaker and walked to, Jefferson County, from Bedford County, to start a new home. Also, that the family were in Bedford Co in the 1790 census. Johan Dedric was said tohave lived in Lancaster Co in Brecknock or Caernarvon TWP.

Troy Burkhart's Andreas (Georg) Burkhart genealogy
From Troy Burkhart: Two Burkhart families in Berks and Lancaster Co areas. One Swiss Mennonite, one German Reformed.
He said the Swiss Mennonite family were named Jacob, John and Jacob, came a little later.
Actually, it looks as if there were two Reformed Burkhart families in Berks County; one from Herbrechtingen, Germany, and the other from Northern Alsace.
A couple of people have suggested to me that Georg below was Georg of the Herbrechtingen family <burkneider.html>who was born to Andreas in 1703. I haven't so far found any evidence for this idea, and I haven't been able to get anything out of Sharon Martin, who the idea seems to trace back to, as she has been too busy traveling for the past six months. Another person who I only think said it has nothing specific to say about it at all, and a third person, who only told me what Sharon Martin said, doesn't want his name associated with it until it is proven or disproven!
I was referred to and got ahold of copies of the two references on the Burkhart/ Burketts of Herbrechtingen, and neither provides any substantiation for the idea that Georg was of this family. Both books included copies of the German records on that family. It is of course not impossible. The names of this family are consistent with the naming pattern of that family. There is no clue when Georg was born, and also apparently there is no clue to the identity of his wife.
