Scheidt 11 Feb 2014 I, Walter Price DeHart, born in Reading, County of Berks,Pa. son of John Charles DeHart 1840-1912, and Rebecca Price 1841-1917; grandson of John Briner Dehart 1805-1841 and Elizabeth Fager 1804-1890, married 1869; great-grandson of John DeHart 1764-1869 and Mary Harner 1774-1860; great-great grandson of John DeHart, and he, the said Captain John DeHart is the ancestor who assisted in establishing American Independance, while serving in the capacity of Captain Pa. Militia. While Captain John DeHart was at Valley Forge with General Washington, the boy John, born in 1764, visited his father the Captain, and gave information about the British Army in Philadelphia. This coming to the attention of General Washington, he sent for the boy and patting him on the head, told him to bring information whenever he could. This information has been brought down through the family history and given me by my sister, Mrs Grace M. Riegel, of Lititz, Pa. as follows: Captain John DeHart was with the Continental Army at Valley Forge, but lived in Philadelphia. His son John DeHart who lived to be 104 years old, acted as a spy when about 14 years old for the Army at Valley Forge, and was personally known to the General, George Washington. As the boy spy, John, was born in 1764, this would seem to be true, as in 1777-1778 the Army was camped at Valley Forge and he would have been about 14 years old. The 6th Series, Volume III, pages 1060 and 1067, later list him as a private of the 6th Company, 3rd Battalion, under date 1784, but the date of enlistment is not given. He was then only 19 years of age. These statements are verified by John DeHart, architect of New York, under date of January 12, 1927, but who died on the 24th of February following, also by Hettie DeHart, of Reading, Pa.
