The photo is not Ezra, but one of his sons.
It was not possible to prove Ezra is the son of Eli. He is cited as the father of Eli in a Miller family genealogy. No source given. From his age at the 1870 census and at death, plus the year of birth on his grave record, he was born in 1804, BETWEEN the death of Eli's first wife on "11, 3rd mo, 1803", and his second marriage which was not until 1806. A member of an abnormally intense, a-social and quiet though leading family, Eli came to the wedding of just a single sibling (he was of a large family), from the signatures in the New Garden Quaker marriage book. This was a small and close-knit community. His birth is not registeredin the New Garden meeting records, and those of his two brothers and his half sister are, as are all data regarding both wives. Mormon records of temple sealings include the other two sons and the daughter of Eli, and not Ezra, which probably simply means that that person got their information from the New Garden records, which the Mormons have a copy of. His birth doesn't appear anywhere, and he certainly existed; tax records, probate records, family financial records, as they made formal, legally documented loans to each other, and the 1873 property map prove it. Thompsons who in fact were his uncle or cousin or nephew and a second cousin were executors of his estate adn of his son's. Tax records show that in 1832, he occupied 100 acres of land in London Britain which Eli Thompson had formerly rented to someone.
The tenant who had paid taxes for that property in previous years was crossed
out, and Ezra's name written in for that property. Clearly, Eli gave it to him. The deed would more than likely mention that Eli was Ezra's father. (His first child was also born in 1832, suggesting that this is the year in which he married, or possibly in 1831, since he could have begun to occupy that land after the tax assessment was done, and also, if his father had leased the land, and since a family did live and farm there, there could have been a lag between when one would expect Ezra and his wife to take up residence there, and when he actually did. You couldn't kick a farming family out in the middle of the growing season with no notice, and it was a time when married couples often lived with parents. On the 1873 property map, his property of 100 acres, which is the amount he was taxed for from 1832, appears along Thompson Bridge Road (where the descendants of Eli Thompson lived) smack between the properties of Eli Thompson's two recorded sons. Eli Thompson, never publicly very visible, seems to have from his meeting's standpoint fallen off the planet on the death of his wife for several years. HE isn't on the meeting's membership list, or anything, though he married there in 1806, and his daughter's birth was registered there about 1810. I suspect that the man developed a case of the depression that runs in my family, and that was a serious and frequent problem in these Quaker families, and never thought to register Ezra's birth. It IS clear that my father inherited much of the Miller personality. The Thompsons were extremely inbred Millers, and Ezra married his Miller third cousin of a line I can't even FIND his grandmother's. I hope he managed to show affection for the boy, as Ezra too seems to have been rather too quiet and humble.
One must consider that the Quakers used a different dating system such that their third month, was our January, and you know how people often are about writing the correct year along about January 11! I have no idea how the Quakers handled the problem that for two months their calender had them lagging a year behind everyone else. Quite possibly someone who had been writing a different year than everyone around him for several months didn't acclimate quickly to the fact that it was 1804. So Ezra's mother actually died on January 11, 1804, and Ezra was born in 1804 on or before January 11! I suspect that Ezra was a child of Eli's first wife who died in or as a complication of childbirth. That Ezra was born of his second wife within months of the death of his first wife and years before he married her, in such a conscientious Quaker family, seems very unlikely. So I proceed on the assumption that Ezra;s mother was Eli's first wife. It could of course be wrong; but I'll think Eli actually fell away from his meeting because he was doing all sorts of screwing around and keeping a mistress when I see evidence of it. It was not possible to check with grave records, because they don't exist from that far back and I was told that that far back the grave wouldn't be readable, either, though certainly the graveyard where it is is still there.
There is further the problem that the London Britain meeting was founded in 1832, there is massive confusion about what meeting it split from and which monthly meeting it belonged to, as well as caused by the existence of split ORthodox and Hicksite Quaker meetings in each community beginning around 1830; this seriously upwardly mobile branch of the Thompsons belonged to the smaller and often obscure Orthodox group, the Mormons who filmed the Quaker records of the area often didn't know there were two meetings and didn't find the ohter one, and often were confused as to which one they found, and I haven't yet seen the record for Ezra's marriage. He would probably have married at New Garden if he didn't marry at London Britain, and it isn't impossible that he DID marry at New Garden since the Mormons don't have the Orthodox records for New Garden. Quaker marriage certificates usually though not always listed the parents of both the bride and the groom, if it was their first marriage.
b 1804 Graveyard records (65 at 1870 census Julia Farver, a grandaughter of Willard Smith, has b 12/28/1804 d 11/21/1873. prob WC, poss MC or NG d 1873, buried LB Quaker meetinghouse graveyard, with wife, some children. Either or both Ezra or his brother Daniel were leaders of and also lead services at the (Orthodox) LB meeting. All anyone so far remembers of them is they lived in WC, and "my mother said they sat in the front pew", the latter statement reminiscent of my own family. My father was Episcopal minister of a small village church.
