Note: ISRAEL CATES was born on 26 Feb 1806 in Orange County, North Carolina. He immigrated in 1852 to Burnet County, Texas. Settled in backbone valley, later called Cates Flat. He died on 20 Aug 1880 in Burnet County, Texas. He was buried in in Burnet County, Texas. He buried in ethridge cemetery. As a young married man Israel and his family moved first to Smith County, Tennessee where all but one child were born. (Also in Smith County, is Thomas Barnett who was the father of Israel's wife ) Then they moved from Smith County, Tennessee after 1840 (they were in the census then) moving up to Illinois by 1846 where the youngest child was born, then down to Hickory County, Missouri, and then down to Taney County, Missouri. Son Levi Monroe lost his first wife in 1853 while living in Taney County, (site of present day Branson), then the family moved on to Texas, settling in Burnet County, where Israel died. Israel was a farmer, his brother the local Doctor, one child was the sheriff, all served on the school board over the years. Israel's brother Robert gave land for the school. MARTHA BARNETT was born in 1809 in south carolina. She died on 7 Jul 1877 in Mason County, Texas. She was buried in in Mason County, Texas. [Stan Glaeser, 1996] Kevin on your genealogy for Israel Cates you show he died in Burnet County and buried Etheridge cemetery. I got that too, but recently found that there was a report in a Llano county newspaper of Israel cates grave on a creekside up there was washed away in the 97 floods. His descendent that lived around there remembered the location of the grave. Israel moved to that area sometime after 1860 to farm. His mother may have been buried in the Baby Head cemetery in tow Valley. Thought you might want to know. bettystout [Betty Stout, <zeno.stout@verizon.net>,2002]
