Notes
a. Note:   1860 Alamance Co, NC census - John Bailiff, age 60, Graham Twnp. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I met my wife, Brenda Kaye Bailey in college, App State in Boone NC in 1972. She lived outside of Graham, Alamance County where her mother stills lives. She is 89. Brenda has two brothers, William and Jerry and a sister, Jelene. They all live in Alamance. Bill and Jerry started and own a car wax company called Duragloss. It is a pretty good size company now. Brenda's parents are: DeWitt Bailey, 6/11/1911, died 4/27/1996 and Bessie Williams. DeWitt is one of 8 children; Dora, Mary, McKinley, Thomas Dewey, Nannie Belle, Henry David, and Harrison Sidney Cecil. All of the children used the Bailey name. Their parents were: Thomas Baker Bailiff, born 12/10/1873 in Alamance County and died 8/28/1945. He married Sallie Grier. He changed his name at some point and I have asked living relatives and no one knows why. He was a farmer laborer and moved back and forth from Chatham to Alamance. Thomas Baker's parents were: David Bailiff born abt 1838 and died btw 1900 and 1910. He married Elizabeth Johnson. She was born abt 1840 and died 8/1/1922. Besides Thomas Baker they had four other children; George b. 1/1871; Levi b. abt 1883, Jerry and Elizabeth. I understand George and Levi changed their name to Bailey, while Jerry kept Bailiff. He lived near Greensboro. David was also a tenant farmer in both Alamance and Chatham Counties. David's parents were John Bailiff and Mary? As I wrote I think her surname was Ray, but I am not positive. In the 1860 census is the following: John Bailiff, 60, a plow maker , Mary, 50 years of age; John, 23; Caroline 20; and Isaac Ray age 73, a cooper. There is also a Susan Ray, 48 and a Nathan Gordon, age 52. I couldn't find him in the 1830 or 1840 census, however in the 1820, Chatham County listing is a John Bailiff and his household contains one male 16 to 26, one male under 10 and one female 16 to 26. He is living in the same area of Thomas Bailiff. Besides David, John and Mary had John b 1837, Caroline b 1840; James b 1825; Marion b 1836 and Adaline b 1832. You have the rest with Thomas and Elizabeth Baker. I am born and raised in and outside of Philly. After we were married in 1974 we came up here to live. I lived within a half a hour of the Chester County Pa Townships. I also work in downtown Philly and visit the Pa Historical Society fairly often. Every August in Chatham there is a Bailey reunion of the families from Dewitt's generation.
