a. Note:   ry, Yorkshire, England. Listed in the Austonley census of 1841 and 1851as living at Greenowlers. Henry married Ellen Hadfield in 1858 and emigrated to the US in 1865. He resided in Philadelphia and was a member of the firm of Whiteley Brothers Company in Cardington, PA.
  Edward Whiteley's obituary of 1920 reads as follows: Edward Whiteley, ninety-three, retired woolen manufacturer, 205 N. 65th St. died this morning while visiting a daughter, Mrs. James Taylor at Secane, Delaware County. Born in England, one of thirteen children, Mr. Whiteley came to America as a young man and became connected with a woolen mill in Cardington. He married twice and is survived by four sons, two daughters, seventeen grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He was the oldest member of the Cooper Memorial M.E. Church, 63rd St and Girard Ave. Buried at St James, Kingsessing, PA.
  Edward and Ellen Hadfield had eight children. Four years after Ellen's death in 1872, Edward married Sarah Gaze. They had no children. Sarah died in 1906.
  In an article from the 1917 Philadelphia Public Ledger, Edward is said to have been active in the Methodist Church for more than 80 years and was Superintendent of the Sunday School in England where he did not miss more than one session in seventeen years. In the same article it says that "last summer (age 90) he spent two weeks assisting camp meetings on the beach at Ocean Grove, NJ." At the age of ninety-three he is quoted in response to the question about his longevity, "Fancy pastry and candy are ruining the health of the American people. Eschew fancy foods."
