1940 CENSUS RECORD NOTE: On the 1940 Census for Edward and the family, Edward is enumerated as "Wilson Wood", instead of Edward Wilson, and is relationed to the head of house as "Son" instead of "Step son". James J. Wood was the respondant to this census, and it's my guess, given the evidence, that he (James) felt Edward was his son and claimed him as such on that year's census.
However as to why I believe 'Wilson Wood' is Edward Wilson, is 1. the estimated birth year lines up to abt. 1919, when Edward was born. 2. James J. Wood did marry a Josephine, her name was Josephine Prudence Key. 3. Edward was the only surviving child from Josephine's first marriage. 4. Edward is living with Josephine and James and his (Edward's) younger half-siblings in the 1930 census, where Edward is enumerated as 'Edward Wilson' and his relation to head of house is 'step son'.

Oral history of Edward M. Wilson, Sr.: "Well, my brother Edward was a hard worker. He and Violet your grandma were married when I was very young- I'm not sure I think that was in 1948 my brother Bud and myself lived off and on with Edward and Violet all of our young lives. Up to 1953 then he and Violet moved to Iowa, I think. Edward was coming to Kansas city in 1956 February I think, when he had a blow-out on the left front tire that pulled the car into the path of an on coming bus, Edward was killed at the scene. Edward was a very strong man, he had a pretty bad temper, but a heart of gold. I guess when you heard your Uncle Edward talk, he sounded as much my brother as anyone. He was taller than Johnny and Jr., I think he was around 5'10"." - Email from William F. Wood, brother of Edward
