Notes
a. Note:   Katherine "Kate" McCarthy was, according to J.J. Houlihan, adopted by her aunt, Margaret (McCarthy) Houlihan after the death of her mother in the late 1860s. She's shown in the 1870 and 1880 census living with the Houlihans - in 1870 with her father and sister Margaret; in 1880 she was living with the Houlihans on Butler St., Pittsburgh, a 14 year old student. As will be seen later, she used the name "Katherine Hollihan."
She and Bernard P. Rawlins applied for a marriage license in Pittsburgh (Pittsburgh Marriage License docket # B7004, Vol. 21, pg. 335) on 21 March 1892 and were married 30 March 1892 by T. F. Briley. In this application she is called "Katie Hollihan," born Armstrong Co., PA, age 24 (She was more likely age 25). At the 1900 census they were living at 5115 Carnegie Ave, Pittsburgh in the same house as her "brother" and "sister," William G. and Mary Jane Houlihan/Hollihan. In addition to their 4 children, Bernard's mother Mary Rawlins was living with them as were 2 other boarders, Harry "Hollihan," age 10, and Walter McCain, age 35. Harry Hollihan was undoubtedly the son of Margaret Houlihan, sister of William and Mary Jane, who'd had a son named Harry (see Notes: Margaret Houlihan).
Kate (McCarthy Hollihan) Rawlins was clearly viewed as a sister and called such by William Houlihan in his will of August, 1902. He left her his Decker Brothers' square piano as well as half interest in his home at 5115 Carnegie St., Pittsburgh at his death in February, 1913. In that document he also encourages her to obtain a judicial decree of "femme sole" so that, apparently, she could own her share of the house wholly in her own name "... in order that her holding hereunder may be and stand relieved of all prejudice or accountability of her distressing coverture." It it not known what this means. [See Notes: William G. Houlihan.]
In early 1916, Catherine Rawlins of 5115 Carnegie Ave., Pittsburgh purchased Lot 298, Section M at Calvary cemetery at the time of the death of her cousin/"sister," Mary Jane Houlihan, in January of that year. On 4 April 1916, "brother" William George was moved to this plot from a single grave elsewhere in Calvary cemetery and 3 Rawlin's were moved from St. Mary's cemetery to this plot - children James & Stella and Kate's mother-in-law, Mary Rawlins.
Catherine herself was buried there as "Katherine" Rawlins, age 59, on 7 January 1936. (This age differs from census records by 7 years; she was born in 1865/66 per the 1870 & 1880 censuses, not 1876. By the 1900 census she was using 1870 as her year of birth, 1973 by 1910 & 1876 by 1920). This "altered" date of birth also appears on her death certificate which gives a birth date of 27 Oct. 1876, rather than 1866. Katherine died of a coronary thrombosis 3 Jan. 1936; she had been under the care of a doctor since 18 Dec. 1935. She was a resident of 5115 Carnegie Ave, Pittsburgh, widow of Bernard P. Rawlins. The father's name given on her death certificate was "John Hollihan." (It is unknown if an "official" adoption ever took place.) His place of birth is shown merely as "Ireland." No mother's name is given, just "Ireland" as a birthplace. Her own birthplace is stated as Pittsburgh, although we know that this was not likely true. Death certificate information was provided by her daughter, Gertrude Majors, who was resident of the same address as her mother.
An obituary for Katherine "Hollihan" Rawlins appeared in the "Pittsburgh Press" on Sunday, 5 Jan. 1936 on page 1 of the Classified section. It reads as follows: "RAWLINS - On Friday January 3, Katherine Hollihan, widow of Bernard P. (Pal) Rawlins. Funderal from her late home 5115 Carnegie Ave. on Tuesday January 7 8am. High mass of requiem at St. Kieran's at 9 am. Interment in Calvary Cemetery. On 19 April 1998 I visited Kate's gravesite and found no Rawlins or Houlihan/Hollihan tombstones at any of the six graves.
