Notes
a. Note:   We know little of Mary Agnes Hawkins, other than that she was born in England of parents both Irish-born. According to the 1900 census, she migrated to the US in 1870, so she likely immigrated with her family as she was just 8 years old in 1870. She is shown in the 1880 census as being "Mary A." - J.J. Houlihan provided her middle and maiden names, which are also shown in her husband's obituary. She appears to have used "Mary" and "Agnes" at different times.
She married John Houlihan, Jr. before the 1880 census, but likely just before, as she was only 21 that year and had no children as yet. By 1900, she was a widow with 6 children, living at 5214 Berlin Alley, Pittsburgh, one street off Butler. Her husband John died in May, 1900, just before the census was taken. She'd born 6 children by June, 1900 and all were still alive.
She appears in the 1910 census as "Agnes Holliwan," 50 years old (she was actually 48), born in England of parents both born in Ireland, and was a widow. All 6 children were still living with her at 2609 Wylie Ave., Pittsburgh in a home she owned under a mortgage. Her occupation is shown as "own income." She indicates in this census that she'd born 11 children, 6 of whom were still living; this lends credence to the conclusion that Raymond Houlihan was one of her deceased children (see Notes: Raymond Houlihan.)
At the time of her daughter Marguerite's marriage in November, 1911, she gave her address as 334 Melwood St., Pittsburgh.
She appears in the 1920 census as Mary "Hollihan," a 53 year old widow (she was actually 58), living at 44 Angle St., Pittsburgh. Only her youngest son, Victor, was still living with her. She reported her immigration date this time as 1877 rather than 1870, and that she was naturalized in 1885. She owned the home they were living in, free of mortgage.
I have as yet been unable to determine the whereabouts of Mary (Hawkins) "Hollihan" after the 1920 census. I have not been able to locate her in the 1930 census.
