Notes
a. Note:   John Kinlen is listed in the 1856-57 Pittsburgh Directory as "mason," living at 15 Wide Alley, Pittsburgh. He appears again in the 1857-58 edition, same address, occupation "laborer." His brother also appears in both these volumes. It's not known whether he and his wife married in Ireland or in the US after immigrating. I was not able to locate him in the 1860 census.
John "Kinlin," age 50, is shown in the 1870 census living in the 11th census ward of Pittsburgh (roll 1297, pg. 370). His occupation is "stone mason" and his real estate is valued at $6,000. He was born in Ireland as was his wife.
In the 1880 census he was living at 12 Enoch St., Pittsburgh with his wife and 5 of his children. He is listed in the 1885 Pittsburgh Directory as John "Kindlin," stonemason, living at 12 Enoch St. Also listed at the same address are James and John J. "Kindlen," also stonemasons, his sons. He is also listed at the same address in the 1890 & 1895 editions of the Directory. While the 1870 and 1880 censuses give him a birth year of about 1820, I've used the date shown on his 2 memorials at St. Mary's cemetery, Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh.
(NOTE: John Kinlen and his family seem to have begun to use the last name "Kindlin" in the 1880's, after the 1880 census. The Directories and the 1900 census all show the name spelled with a "d." I have not changed the name in these records, but it's possible that this branch of the family continued to use the spelling variant into the 20th century. Death and burial records are under this name, as are all 4 memorials/tombstones at St. Mary's Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh.)
His wife is shown in the 1900 census as a 69 year old widow, Mary "Kindlin" renting a home at 12 Enoch St., Pittsburgh. Four children are living with her, James and 3 unmarried daughters, however, all the dates of birth of the children are inconsistent with information in the 1870 & 1880 censuses! Only Mary's birth date is close to what's been given before. I've used the 1870 & 1880 info as I believe it was more accurate when given (especially. since some of the children wouldn't even have been born by earlier census dates, given the birthdates she gave in 1900!)
According to St. Mary's cemetery records, John "Kinlan" died in Pittsburgh at age 76 in May, 1897 from consumption. He was buried from St. Brigid's Church on 10 May 1897 in Section D, lot 116 at St. Mary's Cemetery, along with his wife, children and other members of his family. According to his death certificate, he was 70 (St. Mary's cemetery records are generally more accurate) at death. He was a contractor, married, living at 12 Enoch St., 11 th ward, Pittsburgh, born in Ireland. His parents and their birthplace are listed as "unknown." Cause of death was phthisis pulmonalis of 12 months duration. The undertaker was James J. Flannery of 543 Grant St.
I visited St. Mary's Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh, PA on 18 April 1998 and found the "Kindlin" burials. There are 4 large monuments on the site; John's grave is marked with a large, pale gray stone "couch" tomb, matching that of his wife (appropriate, perhaps, for a family of stonemasons!) The dates inscribed are the dates shown on this genealogy. He is also mentioned on an obelisk-shaped stone at the same site, apparently erected by son John J., as John, "a Native of Parish of Ardee, County Louth, Ireland."
