Notes
a. Note:   Patrick McCarthy is shown on the 1850 census living with his parents, brothers, sister and brother-in-law Houlihan in Donegal Township, Butler Co., PA. His occupation is shown as "laborer." Patrick has yet to be located in a census after 1850.
On 13 January 1858 Patrick McCarthy, as administrator of the estate of David McCarthy (his brother), sold 140 acres of David's land in Oakland Township to another brother, Richard McCarthy, for $350.
In October of 1858, A. McCandless, High Sheriff of Butler, executed a writ on behalf of Alfred Gilmore against P. McCarthy and P. Carthy as administrator of the estate of David McCarthy, which writ Gilmore had obtained in the common pleas court of Butler in April, 1858. Gilmore, according to the court, was awarded $59.90 and $15.33 in costs, apparently for payment of debts incurred. The Sheriff states that he seized 140 acres of land in Oakland Twp. and, in September, 1858, sold the land for $200 to John Graham. This action, too, was not recorded 30 June 1874.
It appears that Richard McCarthy bought 140 acres of his deceased brother David's land from his brother Patrick, but the transaction was not recorded, perhaps was never consummated. Three months later a writ was obtained to sell the land in order to pay debts and, six months later, the writ was executed and David's land sold at public auction. Nothing more is found about Patrick.
On 23 March 1855, a Patrick McCarthy, native of Ireland, filed his intentions at Butler Co., PA to become a US citizen; he signed with his mark. I do not know if this Patrick McCarthy was the senior or junior. John and Dennis McCarthy, whom I've speculated arrived earlier in this country, filed their intentions in 1841.
