Notes
a. Note:   Known to J.J. Houlihan as "Ned," Edward Rodgers and his wife Catherine Houlihan first appear in the 1860 census living in Mifflin Township, Allegheny Co., PA. (This area is now part of the Homestead, Munhall & Whitaker sections of east Pittsburgh.) It appears that they were newlyweds, Catherine being only 18 years old and they had no children as yet. Living with them was Francis Rodgers, assumed to be Ned's brother. Both men were coal miners. Living next door was Hugh Rodgers, assumed to be an older brother, with his wife and 2 young children. Hugh was also a coal miner.
By the 1880 census, Ned and Catherine were living on Washington Pike, Pittsburgh. (Washington Pike is located in the southwest Pittsburgh suburbs, running through Bridgeville; it's not too far from Green Tree Borough.) Ned was a 40 year old coal miner, born in Ireland of Irish-born parents, as was his wife. They had 4 children at this time.
Neither Edward/Ned, Catherine or son John appear in the 1900 census index and their whereabouts after 1880 is not known. I was unable to locate an obituary for Edward or Ned Rodgers in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette or the Pittsburgh Press. However, I have located a death record for "Edward Rogers" in 1900 in Pittsburgh. He's been resident in Pittsburgh for only 20 days before his death from pneumonia; his prior residence was Washington, PA, consistent with the above. He was married (wife not named), parents named as John and Catherine, both of Ireland. He was a miner. Buried at St. Philips Cemetery.
The county of his birth comes from the death certificate of his daughter, Cecelia.
