Note: We know of Henry Kinlen from the death certificate of his son, James Henry, of April, 1899. That death certificate does not mention the name of his wife, but she obviously predeceased Henry; it's possible that she never immigrated from Ireland. It is not known when Henry Kinlen and his sons immigrated to America, although it was before the mid-1850's when they begin to appear in Pittsburgh records. It appears that Henry came to America , perhaps with or at around the time his sons did with no wife. We know that at the baptism of twin children Francis and Biddy in 1816 and at the baptism of daughter Catty/Cathy 30 Dec 1817, Henry and wife Catty/Cathy were called "of Cloughmacoo" which is one of the 22 townland of Nobber, Meath, Ireland. At the June 1828 baptism of daughter Margaret he was apparently of Drumconrath or Drumcondra (historically Drumconra, from Irish: Droim Conrach, meaning "ridge of Conrach") which is a small historic village situated in north County Meath, Ireland. The parish borders County Louth and is also close to the borders of Counties Monaghan and Cavan. Hon 24 July 1852, Henry Kindelin petitioned for citizenship, a resident of Pittsburgh for at least 5 years. His son Patrick vouched for his years of residency. Filed 9 January 1855. A book entitled "Marriages and Deaths from the Pittsburgh Dispatch, 1858-1860" lists the death of Henry "Kindelin," 65 years, of Crawford St. near Wylie, on 20 April 1858. The last name is spelled "Kendelin" on the St. Mary Cemetery plot map. The Carnegie Library in Pittsburgh was unable to locate an obituary and, due to the early date, I'm unable to obtain a death certificate (PA did not require the registration of deaths until about 1885.). St. Mary's cemetery records, in the Lawrenceville section of Pittsburgh, show the burial of a "Henry Kindlin" on 21 July 1858, age 62 years, in Section D, lot 116. He was born in Ireland and died in Pittsburgh. The cause of death was "debility." Henry is buried with son John Kindlin and his family; there is no marker or tombstone naming Henry at the site. The Irish Householders Index for County Louth (stated by son John as his birthplace) lists 3 Kinlans, or variations of the name, who were on the tithe/tax rolls (Tithe Applotment Books) in the 1820's, but not there in the 1850's (Griffith's Primary Valuation Lists). There are: "Kindelan" in Ardee Parish, Ardee Baronry, Ardee Union; "Kindelan" in Dromisken Parish, Louth Barony, Dundalk Union; and "Kinlan" in Termonfeckin Parish, Ferrard Barony, Drogheda Union (the last is recorded in both tax years). Narrowing the information to the first two, I read the Tithe Applotment Books for the 2 parishes and learned the following: 1) South District of Ardee Parish, Ardee Barony, Ardee Union, County Louth, Province of Leicester, Diocese of Armagh: Kindelan, James Kindelan, Henry Each owned small amounts of land, 20 and 12 perches respectively, a "perch" equaling to 16 1/2 feet. The land was rated as "first quality." 2) Dromisken Parish, Louth Barony, Dundalk Union, County Louth, Diocese of Armagh: Kindelan, John -- 2 acres of land, "5th quality." I have been able to confirm that the James & Henry Kindelan of Ardee Parish are the "right" family by the inscription on a memorial to John Kinlen, son of Henry, at St. Mary's Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh. There John is named as a "native of Parish of Ardee, County Louth, Ireland." We know that Henry named a son James Henry, perhaps combining his father's name and his. I have been advised by an Irish researcher that the National Library in Dublin has microfilm of the Catholic church records of Ardee Parish from about 1790 and on. The Library advises that they are unable to read the film for me: either a local expert must be hired or the film read in person. Such a film may confirm the births of brothers James, Henry and John, as well as other siblings, perhaps the marriage of Henry and his wife, etc. I also located the following at Ancestry.com: Ireland, Tithe Applotment Books, 1823-1837 Name: Henry Kindelan County: Louth Parish: Ardee Townland: Parks Year: 1830 ********************* According to "The Surnames of Ireland", Kinlan/O'Kinlan/Kindlin is an abbreviated form of Kindelan. The latter is a Westmeath and Meath branch of the southern O'Neill prominent in Spain (?). The name is now usually merged with Connellan. The Gaelic is O Caoindealbhain, meaning "gracefully shaped." ********************* On Oct, 1999 an Irish researcher contacted me about his Kindlen family. The notes are below: Mary Beth, I am curious, to say the least, about your posting ref the Kindlons/Kinlons/Kindelans/Kinlens and whatever other variation there is on the name. There were certainly Kindlons in the Ardee area at the beginning of the 19th century. My g.g.grandfather was Thomas Kindlon (as you know the spelling of the surname varies considerable), whom I suspect was born in the Ardee area around 1800. He married Rose Smyth 09 Jan 1823 at Haggardstown, outside Dundalk. The had the following children: Patt ( B. ca1824) Margaret (B. ca1834) Bridget (B. ca1836) Owen (B. ca1838-1897) Mary (B. ca1839) Thomas (B. ca1840) Edward The children were born in various parts of north Louth, which would lead me to suspect that Thomas Kindlon was some sort of migrant lablourer. Owen Kindlon was my g.grandfather. In the 1901 census there was a Henry Kindlon living in Hill Street, Dundalk, with his wife Margaret Smyth. I will be in Dundalk next week and will make some enquiries on both out behalfs ref Henry Kindlen and my Thomas Kindlon at the Louth County Library. The baptisms of James Henry and John James should be in the Louth database of RC Church baptisms, though it will take a few weeks to get a reply. Leave it with me! Will be in touch. Posted by Brendan Hall [jbhall@indigo.ie] on Wed, 06 Oct 1999, in response to KINLEN/KINDELAN-Ardee Parish, posted by Mary Beth Wheeler on Thu, 30 Sep 1999 Hi Mary Beth, Not much luck, I'm afraid. I had a search done of the Louth RC Registers. The only HENRY KINLON (and variations of that surname) in the baptism registers is as follows: Parish/ name/ date of baptism/Address/ father's name/mother's name/sponsors Ardee/ Cath Kinlan/ 07 aug 1821/ Mullanstown/ Henry Kinlan/ Biddy Early/ Sp. Catty Reilly Ardee/ Patt Kindeland/ 13 Mar 1824/ Mullanstown/ Henry Kindelan/ Bridget Early/ Sp James Rooney/ Catherine McEntagart Ardee/ Ann Kinley/ 04 Apr 1827 / Tisdall Street, Ardee/ Henry Kinley/ Bridget Early/ Sp. Mary Kinley Ardee/ Thos. Kindelan/ 29 Dec 1829/ College Lane, Ardee/ Henry Kindelan/ Bridget Early/ Sp. Daniel Mallon/ Bridget Mallon. Nothing much to go on there, I'm afraid. But, as I'm interested in the family, I'll keep looking! *************** From Jane Slaughter: [slaughter62@msn.com], Jan. 2003 from the Dundalk library: There was a "James Kindelan" who was a witness for one of Patrick's babies: From Kilsaran Parish, Co. Louth Baptism records, #12.02433: Mary "Kindelan" born October 4, 1832 and baptised the same day, to parents Patrick and Ann Campbell "Kindelan". Sponsors were James Kindelan and Mary Ward. *************** I have found the following spelling variants of the name: KINDALAN, KINDALEN, KINDALIN, KINDALON, KINDELAN, KINDELAND, KINDELANE, KINDELEN, KINDELIN, KINDELLAN, KINDELLON, KINDELON, KINDERLAN, KINDILAN, KINDLAN, KINDLAND, KINDLEN, KINDLIN, KINDLON, KINDOLAN, KINDOLEN, KINEDELAN, KINELAN, KINELEN, KINELON, KINLAN, KINLAND, KINLEN, KINLIN, KINLLAN, KINLON, KENDALEN, KENDALON, KENDELAN, KENDELIN, KENDELLEN, KENDELON, KENDENLON, KENDILAN, KENDILLON, KENDLAN, KENDLEN, KENDLIN, KENDLON, KENDOLAN.
