Notes
a. Note:   Known as "Nick," Nicholas is shown in the 1880 census living with his parents and siblings as a young student. I located Nicholas Guttendorf and Philomena Ritzer in the Pittsburgh Marriage License Registry Index in 1892, volume 24, page 227, series B11180.
Nicholas is listed in the 1895 Pittsburgh Directory as a boilermaker, like brothers Fred, Jr., Joseph and Charles. He was living at 262 38th St., Pittsburgh. By the 1900 census, he was married with 3 children and living at 262 37th St., Pittsburgh, the next street from his mother who was at 246 38th St. I was unable to locate him in the 1920 census; he was a widower by that time. His tombstone at St. Mary's Cemetery, Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh gives his middle initial as "J" rather than "H."
